Sadness. Emptiness.
That's all that had been felt recently by the young girl who used to be filled with such promise. Such light.
As her golden eyes glazed around the group sitting at her table, Clementine couldn't help but feel these things more than ever. She was surrounded by all the people that loved her, and yet she had never felt more alone.
She felt as if she was going insane. Nothing she was thinking made sense. Why did she feel so alone in the world when the people sitting before her never hesitated a moment before telling her how much they adored her? How much her simple presence could lift the mood in the room and cause enemies to morph into friends for an instant. Why did she feel like none of that mattered? Like none of it was true?
Maybe it was because she felt so alone all the time. Like she didn't matter and her sole purpose was simply to make other people happy, but never herself. She loved these people, but not nearly as much as she had loved before. She had lost far too many people in order to feel the same intense amount of love as she once had. Lee. Her parents. Her friends. Her entire life. It was all gone.
"Clem? Where are you going?"
"Hm?" Luke's voice carried through the air and nestled into her ears, causing her to turn around and face the male. "What do you..." Her voice trailed off as she glanced down at her worn-out black sneakers. She hadn't realized that her feet were carrying her up the stairs, whisking her away from the noises and crowds of people and towards her own private sanctuary. "Oh." She breathed.
Luke gave a weak smile. He had noticed of course, he probably more than anyone else in the household. He liked to consider that Clementine was his responsibility despite the fact that she could hold her own better than most of the adults in their little group. "Go ahead. I'll make sure nobody disturbs you."
Her golden eyes stared at him silently, watching as he gave her an encouraging nod to go forwards. He understood, and she had to admit that that was the sweetest of all. He knew she needed time alone; to heal and to think. It was shocking to know that he was the only one that understood that. "Thank you." She whispered, allowing her legs to whisk her up the stairs and away into her own world.
The creaking of floor boards behind Luke caused the male to turn around, only to see Bonnie looming behind him. "What's up with the kiddo?"
Luke sighed. "She's not doing so hot." Sauntering on his way towards their dining table, he plopped himself down and groaned. "It's gotta be tough. It's easier to see that everyday. The way that she looks at other people," He sighed, rubbing his temple and eye in mental exhaustion. "She's hurting somethin' awful."
Bonnie slowly slid beside him, resting her palms against the table and sweetly rubbing his shoulder attempting to get him to loosen up. He worried about Clementine more than he worried about his own health. "If there's anything I've seen from the short while I've been with you guys, it's that she looks up to you. If anybody can get her to speak it's you."
He remained silent, head in his hands, contemplating what his next move would be. His answer was quickly decided for him.
Faint sobbing being lifted up into the air and kissing their ears snapped them from their thoughts, Luke's head rising slowly as the crushing noise registered in his mind.
"Is that..." Bonnie began, her voice silent and still.
Before she could continue her sentence, Luke was up and up and off towards the stairwell. He knew. He was positive what this was now. That was the sound of a little girl falling to pieces. Bonnie quickly scurried to her feet, following him close behind. The male's palm finally made contact against the door, slowly pushing it open with a soft creaking filling the small quarters that was her room.
"Clementine?" He called gently, slowly planting his boot against the aging wooden floorboards. Light cascaded out from the hall and flooded into the darkened room, before the small beam grew and pressed itself against the body of a 12-year-old child curled up in the other, head resting in her legs. She had been doing this for quite some time now. When the world became too much to bare, when she had nobody else to turn to, she let herself break and dealt with the aftermath herself. Alone. Like she had been for so long. "Clementine..." He breathed again, this time as a plea for attention. Someone needed to start gluing her back together again; she was cracking.
Her body didn't flinch. Her frail arms squeezed themselves against her legs, quivering in disbelief.
Taking a deep breath, determination sinking into his bones like air into his lungs, Luke started forward and took a seat against the edge of her mattress. "Come here..." He breathed, wrapping his arms around her frail figure, tugging her closer and into his lap. Today, he was going to be her glue. Hugging her, hoping to hold her together like breaking pieces of glass, he tucked her head under his stubbled-over chin.
Bonnie watched the two, sorrowful seas swaying in her eyes as she started forward and placed a delicate hand against Clementine's shaking shoulder. "It's okay, sweetie. It's all okay now." Such simple words, but such powerful ones.
The child's arms wound themselves around the male, squeezing him and tugging him closer to her body, quivering with remorse and sadness.
"You're okay now, Clem. Nothing's gunna hurt you anymore." Luke whispered, resting his dry lips against the top of her head, his other hands rubbing her back.
Well into the night they sat, Bonnie's head eventually falling against Luke's shoulder, tears slowing and drying against the young girl's face as her mind drifted into sleeping wonder, while the male sat awake and watched over the two well into early morn.
He was going to hold the both of them together. He was going to be the glue for his two favourite people in the world.
