For the most part, things fell all the time in Richmond. Hearing objects hit the floor never phased Javier, and eventually he dismissed every crashing sound as nothing more than white noise. This sound, however, struck him differently.

Opposed to the usual sounds of weapons, metal, wood, or equipment clattering to the ground, this sound was softer, more gentle, and came directly from his side.

He had just dismissed Clementine for the night, sending her to get dinner and rest after a long day of collecting firewood and cleaning a Richmond warehouses. Thanks to this, hearing a clattering sound directly from where she had just been seemed suspicious.

Turning his head, ripping his attention from the nail he was driving into a door frame, he spotted a small sliver of plastic on the ground. Looking up, he watched Clementine slip outside, embracing the evening sunlight. Hoping he could chase after her to return the object Javi assumed was hers, he finished up his task and reached to scoop the object into his hand.

Twirling it in his hand, slowly starting after the girl, he turned to study it. His eyes gradually widened, his walk cycle slowed, and his desire to chase after her fell.

A razor blade.

She dropped a razor blade.

His gaze lifted and lingered against the door she had passed through, so completely unaware of the discovery he had just made — one that would shatter her when she learned he knew.

"Javi, that door needs finishing." David called from where he had been reorganizing the dining hall or, at the very least, attempting to. He stopped when he spotted his brother staring off absentmindedly, fiddling with what looked like a toy. Rolling his eyes, dismissing the actions as 'classic Javi,' he drew closer.

The entire time, Javi didn't notice.

"Javi, come on. This dining hall is going to be chaotic if we don't make this safe to--" He stopped, finally within arms length of his brother, noticing exactly what he was twiddling in his fingers. His brows contorted, studying the razor blade resting in his palm. "Javi, what--"

"Clementine," he breathed, as if the name came before the thought. He turned, eyes drowning in panic. "It's hers."

David's expression, at first, didn't change. It remained stuck in it's concerned, baffled hybrid. "What?"

"The razor, David. The razor is hers." Javi took his free hand and rolled it through his hair, abandoning the handful of nails it was originally carrying, scattering them on the ground. "It fell out of her bag."

David shook his head as his brother spoke, denying the thought completely. "That can't be true."

"David," flabbergasted, Javi continued. "Those 'battle scars' on her arms? They weren't from her running errands they're from this."

David's lips pressed together, his gaze shifting from the object to his brother. With his head wavering in denial, he said nothing. A part of Javi knew he didn't want to. He didn't want to acknowledge the reality.
