"So, was a single apple worth it?""Ugh," Clementine groaned, wriggling between the two branches now housing her hips. "Leave me alone, Javi."
The adult smirked from where he was seated, cross-legged, in the grass before the female. The teen was wedged strictly between two of the tree's giant branches, mere inches away from a luscious red-apple.
It was haunting her, that way it was swaying back and forth as a gust of wind whipped past. Her bare arms quivered.
Oh she would kill for that apple. She would do anything to get her hands on some fresh fruit after eating canned gunk for years.
"You know, if you had just asked for help--"
"Can it!" She snapped, one arm planted a branch at her side. Her other waved desperately in the direction of the forbidden fruit: the long she longed for, but couldn't touch. If she pushed herself just a little bit closer, maybe she could reach it. She could feel the bark of the tree snag on her shirt and jeans, digging into her bare skin. Her legs flailed as she tried to get closer, also hoping to rid herself of the stabbing sensation digging into her hip.
The entire time she could hear Javier chuckling below.
"Oh my God. I'm sorry," he breathed between jolts of laughter. "I need to get Gabe to look at this--"
"Javi!"
"I swear I'll be right back."
"I'm going to kill you, Javier Garcia!"
"Big talk coming from a girl stuck in a tree having been bested by a single apple."
"You're," she grunted, adjusted her waist from between the branches to shoot the man a death glare. "Done for."
As he trotted away, waving a hand dismissing her threat, she urgently twisted her waist. All she wanted was to break free before Gabe arrived. That was the absolute last thing she wanted. How mortifying it would be if he saw her like this.
She groaned as she twisted her body, feeling the bark dig into her skin. At this point, she couldn't care less about that Godforsaken apple. She just wanted — no — needed to get the hell out of those branches.
She was desperate. She would do anything.
Her legs flailed madly behind her, hoping to give her body some kind of momentum to escape her position. She gave a soft wail as she felt a piece of bark slice through her skin, ensuring her waist's bleeding.
Even better.
With a wail, she planted her hands on each of the branches. She pulled her feet as far as she could into her body, pushing them into the tree trunk. If she pushed hard enough, maybe she could throw herself forward and get the hell out of there before Javi returned.
"Okay, let's do this." She breathed, positioning herself accordingly. "Three, two..." Hearing faint footsteps behind her, she forced her feet into the trunk, the snapping of bark sounding beneath her books. She dug her hands into each of the branches, forcing her body forward as much as possible. "On--woah!" She didn't get a chance to finish before her body ripped forwards, the bark slicing across her waist and legs. She tumbled down the tree trunk and slammed onto the grass with a thud, a faint groan of hers to follow.
The footsteps grew quicker, more urgent and desperate after her landing.
"Clem!"
From the ground, her eyes widened. Almost immediately, her expression crashed back into anger. She could recognize Gabe's voice anywhere.
God Javi sucked. This was almost worse than Gabe seeing her in the tree.
"Clem! Oh my God!" The teen gasped, panting as he threw himself to her side. His hands waved over her, as if wanting to touch her but being afraid to. "Are you alright?"
"Sore," she groaned, slipping her hand into the tender one he eventually held out for her. "But alright." She could feel one of his hands slip behind her back, hoisting her to her feet as cautiously as he could.
At first, Gabe offered a smile, content that she was back on stable ground. As he backed away to give her space, he caught side of the slashes through her pant fabric, exposing the bleeding gashes beneath it. His eyes widened in panic. "Clem..."
Her eyes closed. She was hoping he wouldn't notice. Before he had a chance to continue, she spoke. "It's not that bad."
"Does it hurt?"
"No, it's fine."
His brows pressed, his lips pouting in stubbornness. "It's not fine, you're hurt."
"Gabe..."
His gaze grew stern as it lifted, meshing with the one of the girl before him. The moment they met, they each softened, stunned by the stare of the other. Clementine was shocked at the genuine concern, almost anger, Gabe had at such a simple injury. Gabe was shocked with the way Clem was looking at him: with tender surprise and exhaustion.
The silence was shattered by Javi's cocky chuckles.
Gabe's neck whipped to face the male, his gaze tightening. Javi was shielding his face with one of his hands, staring at the tears in Clem's pants and shirt. "All for an apple, Clem."
"Javi, she's bleeding."
"It's a cut on the leg from tree bark. She isn't going to die."
"You left her hanging in a tree, Javi!" Gabe spat. "You laughed at her instead of helping her."
Javi's laughter heightened, the anger his nephew had only fuelling his entertainment. "She's safe, is she not?" He sighed, rubbing at his teary eyes. "I guess an apple a day brings the doctor closer for you, huh kiddo?"
The teen rolled her eyes, uncrossing her arms to brush the dust off of her pants opposed to dignifying him with a response.
Suddenly, behind her to the right, Clementine heard a slapping sound. Turning, the girl caught the side of the apple, her apple, laying perfectly in the grass.
The wind had knocked it from the tree.
Javi howled, falling to the ground much like the fruit. Gabe stood silent, lips pursed in shock and awe.
Clementine, in contrast, clenched her fists. "You're fucking kidding me."
