“Clem!” Luke cried excitedly, creaking the door open to the young girls temporary bedroom. “Time to get up, we have lots to do today.”
With a groan, the raven-haired girl sat up in her bed with her classic hat still fastened tightly to her head. “Okay…” She grumbled reluctantly, sliding out of her bed and sauntering out of her wooden room door. With a small smirk, Luke followed her tail.
As they walked down the stairs, Clementine raised an eyebrow at her companion. “What all do we need to do anyways?”
Luke gave a tiny sigh, yet his classic grin never left his face. “Well, we need to attend to some of the crops that Walter planted out back, and then we need to turn the wind turbine on again.” He commented, gesturing to the large turbine that sat on the yard in front of their lodge. They had to turn it off the night before to avoid attention and prevent too much noise.
“Am I in charge of the turbine again?”
Luke rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly at her question. Yeah, their group seemed to give Clementine a lot of the dirty work, but it was only because they had to defend their base. Unfortunately, because Clementine was the only kid who was able to function in these circumstances, she was given most of the work. “Not this time, kiddo. I promise.” He lifted his hand to ruffle her hair under her cap, when suddenly her cap slipped off revealing her long, puffy hair.
Clementine glanced up and sighed. “My hair is always in the way.” She grumbled, taking her hat from Luke as he handed it back to her.
“It needs a trim, huh?”
Clementine looked up from her hat and nodded. “Yeah, it hasn’t been cut since…” Clementine’s face fell, remembering that the last person who had cut her hair; Lee.
Luke frowned as the young girl did. “It’s okay, Clem. I’ll cut your hair.” He didn’t need an explanation or a reason why, all he knew is that she needed it done and he was willing to do that for her.
Clementine’s frown faded to a weak smile. “Thanks, Luke.”
Placing a hand on her shoulder to guide her, Luke walked her towards the small living room area and sat her down on the couch in front of the fireplace. “Do you mind letting your hair down while I go find some scissors?”
Clementine silently nodded, and the only sound to radiate off of the ski lodge walls was the thumping of his feet starting towards the supply room. Carefully raising her hands to her hair ties, she nervously began to tug at them. She hadn’t even touched them since Lee had placed them in her hair, she didn’t want to. Lee was just a memory, and she wanted to keep everything that she had of him close. That included her hair and his blood on her cap.
“Ready, Clem?” Luke called as he slid the door to the supply room closed. He slipped the scissors out from his back pocket and gave her a warm smile. He hoped he was displaying confidence, because internally he was panicking. He had no idea how to cut her hair so that she would like it, that was his major concern. If she liked it, that’s all that mattered to him.
“Yeah, I’m ready.” She said softly, turning herself to watch the fireplace that roared in front of her.
“Okay,” He sighed as he took a stood behind Clementine’s chair. “Here we go.”
Carefully, he lifted the puffy hair into his hands and gently snipped at the ends, slowly and carefully beginning to trim her hair. After a few minutes passed, he gained more confidence and began to cut off larger pierces, but being careful not to cut off too much. Occasionally, he would place his hands on the sides of her head, moving her so that he could get cleaner cuts. Just like Lee did. The whole scenario was heartbreaking to Clementine. It was so similar, almost mirrored of what had happened before the fallout.
“Okay Clem, I think I’m almost done.” He claimed softly, adjusting her hair a little more.
“Does it look stupid?” She whispered. Again, so extremely similar to her and Lee. But she needed to ask just like she had asked Lee so many years ago. She needed to know. She trusted Luke, butdid want to know if she looked okay. At least in his mind.
Luke blinked in surprise at her question, and adjusted her head a little more so that she was able to tie her hair up like it was before. “Why would you ask that?” He asked, almost startled by the sadness in her voice.
“I just…need to know.” She whispered quietly. It was hard to explain, but she just wanted to hear someone else say that they liked her hair. Maybe then it wouldn’t be so heartbreaking every time she glanced at her hair. Because then she would know that Lee wasn’t the only one that loved it that way.
After tying the final tie in her hair, he slipped in front of the young girl, kneeling so he could get a better look at her face. “Clem, you could never look stupid.” He said quietly, passing her hat towards her.
She met his eyes for a brief moment before taking her hat and holding it tightly in her lap. “Thanks, Luke.” She said quietly.
Luke gave her a warm smile as she lifted her cap to her head and slipped it on over her hair. “You look great, Clem.” He said, using his knees to push himself to his feet.
“Really?” She asked, nervously touching the back of her head and running her fingers over her little bumps of hair.
“Trust me, Clem.”
Clementine’s serious face quickly melted into a small smile as she stood and walked up beside him with a tiny, thankful nod. She trusted him, so she knew that her hair did look okay. He liked her hair just like Lee did, and that brought her a lot of comfort.
“Now come on, I’ll turn on the wind turbine.” He commented with a smirk.
Clementine gave a tiny laugh, and nodded. “I guess I’d better help you.”
