"Argh!" Clementine grunted, collapsing to the ground and shielding the baby's body with her own as a storm of bullets pelted against the ground surrounding them.
"Clementine! Jesus, I didn't even see him out there."
Clementine crawled back towards Luke and panted, finally leaning against the large rock they were hiding behind. "It's okay, I got him."
As she attempted to regain her breath, she watched in shock and awe as the people around her were violently fighting for their own freedom and lives, watching as this child's mother's limp body rested across from them. "He's growing up without parents..." She mumbled to herself, glancing down at the wailing boy with mournful eyes.
"He's never going to have a real Mom and Dad..." Luke sighed, carefully studying the gaze the child had as she watched her "adoptive" younger brother. Both of them would by the looks of it. Clementine's perished in the same way that AJ's did; the cruelness of the world around them.
"Clementine," Luke began, sealing her attention from rocking the child to meet his hazel gaze. "You need to take AJ, and you need to leave."
"Wha..." Clementine breathed, giving a look of sheer horror and terror at the male's words. Was he honestly expecting a child to run away with a newborn baby and somehow keep both of them alive? Was he insane? "What are you talking about?!" She screeched over the wails of bullets flying just past their heads.
"Clem, this won't be for long. Just get out of here with him. All of this," He stated, waving his arms past the rocks they were hiding behind. "Isn't safe for him."
"So running through a storm of bullets is better?!"
"There's a chance." He sighed, allowing her statement and position to sink in. "We'll run out of bullets eventually. Use that time to get out of here with him. I'll meet up with you later."
"You promise?" She asked, raising an eyebrow and tucking the young boy's head into her shoulder.
"I promise you, Clem. I've never been more serious in my life."
Clementine's face remain still, the possibilities and the outcomes racing through her mind. Each and every possible answer, decision and its consequences highlighting every move that she made and everything that she did.
A cease in bullet fire is what quickly silenced her thinking and replaced it with a frantic voice.
"Now Clem! Go!" Shooing her with his hands, Luke gestured towards the nearest patch of forest for the raven-haired girl to run towards. "I promise, I'll find you."
The confidence in her friend's tone gave her enough strength to propel herself to her feet and skyrocket forwards. Her feet flew against the dirt, lifting and throwing around the debris with each thumping land against the earth.
"Where's she going?!" She heard Kenny screech, the grip on his gun loosening at the lack of bullets.
And then, bang.
A gunshot.
Clementine's eyes widened. She had to be imagining things, she and Luke were both confident that the gunfire had stopped, that everyone was out of bullets. There couldn't have been one more.
An ear-piercing scream and a small thud in her arm tossed her into reality once more. A shade of crimson began painting the side of AJ's blanket matching perfectly with his screams of agony.
"A-AJ!" Clementine breathed, racing deeper into the forest to escape the daunting gazes of her crew and enemies. "AJ, just calm down." She panted, taking a seat against one of the nearby rocks and setting herself against it with AJ neatly in her arms.
His screams were killer and heartbreaking, ripping your heart out and stomping on it with each new wail. A child crying is always an awful sight to see, but a child with an injury is always so much worse. Knowing that you can't do anything to help their pain is the greatest killer of all.
"I need to get this bullet out." She breathed, rubbing the unshed tears from her eyes and carefully unraveling his blanket.
Upon seeing his bare arm her eyes widened. There was no bullet. It went clean through his arm and was now resting in the side of his body. No wonder his screams were so loud. "Oh my god..." Clementine gaped, hands over her mouth, watching as the little boy she adored grew paler and paler in colour.
"AJ, I am so sorry. It's my fault all of this happened." She shook her head in disapproval, ducking her head into her hands. "I'm an awful sister. I shouldn't have listened to Luke, I should have stayed put."
Over time, gradually his screams faded and faded, into tiny whimpers and into groans of despair. He was almost as pale as a sheet when Clementine heard quickly paced footsteps approaching, and the wobbling of Luke on his injured leg.
"Clementine!"
Her golden, teary eyes removed themselves from the child and glanced up at her friend, shaking her head in sorrow.
Noticing her gaze, Luke kneeled down and brushed his rough thumb under one of her eyes. "Come on, Clem. Don't cry."
Clementine held the baby out to him, sniffling in disapproval. "Look what I did." She admitted. "It was my fault that this happened."
Luke's eyes widened as he peeled back the blood soaked blanket to reveal the large wounds against little AJ's side. Anyone could see that his life was fading, his pale skin and weakened voice were clear indicators. "Clem..."
"I don't know what to do. We need to fix him but I have no idea how. I need help, Luke."
"Clementine, we can't do anything." He stated sadly, defeated. "We don't have any bandages or medical supplies, the rest of the group has nothing, and look," He held the child out for her to study. "He's not going to make it, Clem."
"Don't say that!"
"I don't want to. But it's not fair to any of us or to him to keep him going on. He's in agony and there's nothing any of us can do."
"What do you suggest then?"
Luke paused. "We leave him."
"Leave him?!"
"We'll make him a nice little place to sleep. It'll be comfy, relaxing. A nice place for him to die."
"But he'll turn!" Clementine scoffed through her waterfalls of tears. "This is so wrong..."
"I know he'll turn, but I cannot stab a baby in the forehead." Luke stated, frowning and growing teary at just the thought. "Especially not to this little man."
Clementine glanced down at the babe Luke carried in his arms, frowning as he gently rocked it back and forth. "Okay. Let's do this, then."
Luke gave a gentle pat against Clem's shoulder before standing and wandering towards a small patch of brush. Clementine scattered some leaves out along the ground, bits of grass to cushion the centre, and small twigs surrounding the little area. "Set him down."
Luke carefully placed the baby against his nature bed and stood, watching as he groaned and rolled in pain; watching as his body slowly lost its battle.
"Let's go, Clementine."
"Yeah. I guess we must."
