Searing, agonizing pain. Those were the only words that could be used to describe what Clementine was feeling. With the loudest scream she had ever mustered, her vocals cords strained the high note as she collapsed onto the wooden bridge. Matthew immediately took off in the other direction, wether it be fear of Nick or of walkers being attracted by the noise.
"Clem!" Luke screamed, leaning over the small girls frame and she lay broken against the old bridge.
"Shit!" Nick cried, dropping his gun onto the bridge as he dashed closer. "Oh god. Fuck! Is she okay?"
Clementine whimpered and gasped in pain. "A-Ah!" She cried as Luke gently rolled her over.
"Ugh, Nick! Does she look okay?!" Luke asked sarcastically, glaring up at his friend before gently brushing some hair out of the young girls face. His eyes darted down to her own as blood began to exit her body at an alarming rate. "Oh god... no no no no no." Luke whispered, leaning over her body. "Clem, listen to me! You gotta stay awake, okay?"
Despite Clementine's eyes slowly fading shut she nodded and desperately tried to keep them open. Her eyes felt like they had weights, her body was cold, she felt so empty, and searing pain was all that radiated from her arm. "A-Ah! Okay..." She whimpered, tears gathering in the corners of her eyes.
Luke quickly lifted the girl into his arms, trying desperately to not move her arm and bolted straight towards the end of the bridge. "Carlos!" He yelled.
"Luke, keep it down! That gun shot was enough-" Rebecca stopped speaking upon seeing the bleeding young girl. "Oh god...did she get bit?"
"No, Nick shot her." Luke growled, resting the young girl against a log and placed his hands on her pale cheeks. Everyone turned to Nick and gave him a glare mixed of anger and confusion. "Accidentally." Luke added, biting onto the end of his shirt and ripping a long piece of fabric off.
Nick glanced at the ground in sorrow and turned away to sit alone, letting his gun drop to the ground as he did so.
Carlos very carefully began to roll up
her sleeve, causing Clementine to scream in pain. The cries were so loud he was required to stop. "Clementine," Carlos began, but Clementine's crying and painful screams were to urgent to be ignored. Carlos turned to Luke with a desperate gaze. "Luke, please keep her calm. I can't operate if she's like this."
"And it might attract walkers." Rebecca added, stepping closer and sitting on the log beside the young girl.
"That's our last concern right now." Luke claimed harshly, glaring at Rebecca as he leaned closer to the young girl. She couldn't believe her lack of concern for the injured child. His gaze softened as it landed on Clem's pained face, small tear marks apparent on the sides of her cheeks. "Clem," Luke choked out. It shattered him whole to see the girl like this. "Clem, look at me." He whispered, gently brushing her hair out of her face. He placed one hand on the far side of her head, and the other against her shoulder closest to him. "Shhh...Clem listen." His finger gently brushed her hair along the far side of her head, rubbing the side of her temple. Clementine's golden eyes were drowned by pools of water as they slowly peeled open. Luke twitched as he could physically feel his heart break. "Carlos is going to help your arm, okay? Just relax."
"Luke..." She whined, shaking her head. "I can't feel my arm at all..."
"I know, I know..." He whispered, rubbing her shoulder relaxingly. Carlos began to roll up her sleeve, causing Clementine to jolt in anxiety. "Shh," Luke's hand brushed against the side of her head, hoping that the soothing motion could relax her.
Carlos carefully pulled tweezers out of his backpack and nodded at Luke to keep her distracted as he carefully began to get the bullet out.
Clementine whimpered loudly in pain, but it never went louder than that. She was too weak to go any louder.
"Clem, you're going to be alright..." Luke hushed, giving a weak smile down at the girl as her eyes searched his for comfort. "Carlos is going to fix you up, you'll be fine."
"What if I'm not?" Her weak voice whispered.
Luke's eyes widened ever so slightly. It was at that moment that he realized just how much he cared for this kid. He couldn't imagine the thought of her not making it through this. They wouldn't be able to just leave her behind, that would be too painful; it was be just as hard to have to shoot her to prevent her from coming back. God, just the thought of needed to end her short life brought tears to his eyes. "You're going to be fine, Clem." His hoarse voice whispered, grabbing odd looks from the other members of their group. Luke was rarely the one to show such strong emotion. "I won't let anything bad happen to you."
Clementine nodded, whimpered and ducking her head into his shirt in agony as the bullet was finally removed from her arm.
"I need a bandage, now." Carlos demanded, taking fabric to clear the area around wound. "She's lost a lot of blood and now that the bullet isn't keeping any more in she's going to lose a whole lot more." Quickly, Luke passed over the long ripped fabric from his shirt and immediately returned to Clem. "He got it out, Clem. You're okay."
Carlos took a cotton pad and pressed it against the wound, wrapping the orange shirt fabric around it tightly and tying it together. Carlos gestured for Luke to walk over to the side, but before doing so he commanded Rebecca to watch over her until he returned. Heading over to Carlos, he stuffed his hand nervously his pockets and awaited his words. "She lost a lot of blood. Considering I didn't have lot of the proper tools she lost a lot more than she should have and will continue to lose more as time goes on."
"What does that mean?!" He asked, almost angrily. He wouldn't dare say that they had to leave her or that she wouldn't make it. No matter what the cost, she was coming with them.
"It means that someone is going to have to carry her for a few days because she doesn't have enough energy to walk. She's also going to need more water and food, and lots of rest."
"Then that's what we'll give her."
Carlos studied Luke's expression closely before sighing and rubbing his temple. There was no winning with Luke when he was determined to get something he wanted. "You're in charge of her."
"Gladly." He responded, turning away abruptly to attend to the young girl. Reaching her side he gave Rebecca a warm smile and returned to his old position with his arms wrapped around her. "What do you need, Clem?"
Clementine groaned quietly, slowly turning her head to see him. "I....I need-"
"Woah!" Alvin yelled, grabbing the sword out of Luke's back holder. "Walkers!"
"Damnit!" Nick grumbled, pulling out his gun."
"They must have been attracted to your gun." Carlos complained, placing his hands on Sarah's shoulders directing her away from the chaos.
"Luke..?" Clementine began nervously. He wouldn't abandon her, would he? She was too weak to move, she couldn't push herself up. Clementine looked up to her left to see a walker looming over her body. Her eyes widened in fear before Luke leapt between the two and stabbed it's skull with a hammer.
"Clem, are you okay?" Luke asked urgently, kneeling over her and checking her for anymore injuries. Without giving her a chance to speak, Luke gathered her in his arms. "Let's go, kiddo." He whispered softly, dashing towards the woods with her scooped into his arms.
Clementine stared up at him with awe as he charged into the woods, pulling her closer with every passing footstep. "Thank you." She whispered quietly.
Luke's run slowed down to a walk as he searched for the other members of his group. Seeing them a ways away, he started walking towards them. After carefully adjusting his hold on the small girl and smiled sweetly at her as he caught this breath.
"Anything for you, Clem."
