Clementine sighed, adjusting her hat in the mirror as she stared at her dirty skin. They had finally reached the ski lodge, a place that could keep them safe for a while, and she decided that now was as good a time as any to wash up.
“Clem, you okay?”
Clementine sighed, drying her face with a towel before nodding and replying. “I’m fine, Luke. I’ll be down in a minute.” Quickly, she grabbed her hat and bag off the counter and headed out the door. “Sorry.” She said quietly with an embarrassed shrug before starting down the stairs towards the rest of their group.
“Dinners on the table.” He commented, following behind her as they went down the stairs. He placed a hand against her back, as if to help guide her to her down the staircase.
Finally reaching the table, Clementine slipped her hat safely onto her head and smiled contently, causing some odd looks to surface around the table.
“Clem, what’s up with you and that hat?” Kenny asked, referring to the conversation they had near the fire place earlier. While he knew the she loved it, he never knew the actual origin of it. Clementine glanced around the table at all the confused faces before she opened her mouth to respond.
“It’s pretty dirty. You should wash it, you don’t want it to start smelling.” Carlos suggested, not giving her a chance to respond.
“Yeah! And I’ll help you.” Sarah added with a warm smile. Clementine sank slightly in her chair. “What does it matter? Kenny and Nick always wear hats.” She said softy. Noticing the sadness in her voice, Luke glanced up from his food and studied the people at the table with glares. What were they doing? What did it matter if she wore a dirty hat?
“Yes, but the difference between them and you is that they occasionally take them off.” Carlos added. “You’re always wearing yours.”
“You’d think that hat was sewn to your head you wear it so much.” Rebecca commented with a small smirk.
As he watched the nightmare unfold, Luke could feel his fists tighten. What’s up with these guys? Why do they always need to pick on her?
Clementine gently touched the tip of her hat in sorrow as Carlos sighed. “Tonight, you should give that thing a wash. It’s covered in blood.”
Clementine gave a tiny gasp, sorrow filling her eyes and voice. She still had Lee’s blood on her hat, and she wasn’t ready to wash it off yet.
“Guys!” Luke yelled, irritation dripping from his lips. “Can you back off? Jeez, why are you all so persistent?”
Their voices continued to speak, asking her and probing her for why she never takes it off or washes the article of clothing.
Luke constantly shot cold looks around the table and was about to speak when suddenly, Clem’s hands slammed down on the table as she stood. “My Dad gave me this hat.” She yelled loudly, as if to talk over everyone. “This is the last thing I have of him. And the last thing I have of Lee.” Clementine turned her harsh gaze towards Kenny, who gave her a sorrowful gaze in response.
“Clem—”
“Just…” Clementine started cutting Kenny off. Her body slumped slightly, all the tenseness and anger vanishing and being replaced with sorrow. “Just….” As she repeated the word, a half-sob escaped the young girls mouth, causing Luke to turn towards her a little more as a sea of pity grew in his eyes.
That’s it. The final straw. They made Clem cry, and it was time to put a stop to this. “What the hell, guys?! It’s her hat, what’s the big deal if she wears it all the time?”
Clementine sniffled sadly. “Just stop asking me to wash it. I can’t!”
Luke reached a hand out towards the girl but she quickly jolted away. “Just leave me alone!” She cried, grabbing her backpack and starting deeper into the ski lodge, rubbing her watery eyes with her arm as she went.
Luke’s hand fell back beside him as his eyes slowly melted from defeat to anger. He slowly stood, letting everyone at the table have time to let what she said sink in before she spoke. “Happy?”
The room was silent.
Luke stood a little taller, his hands turning into fists yet again. “I don’t know what the hell you guys were thinking, but why are you teasing a little girl on what she likes to wear? I don’t give a damn if walkers are taking over; she’s still a little girl. It doesn’t matter if her hat is dirty with blood. Pushing her and being assholes isn’t going to do anything for anyone.” Luke scolded, his voice rising to a yell.
He quickly turned on his heel and started in the direction the young girl went when Nick’s voice broke the silence. “Where are you going?”
He stopped and growled quietly under his breath. “To find a little girl.”
Luke wandered around into the back storage spaces in the lodge and heard tiny whimpers coming from the back room. He carefully walked through an archway, and saw Clementine sitting in the corner, sniffling and holding her picture of Lee.
“Hey, kiddo.” He said quietly.
Clementine’s golden eyes glanced up at the figure as he sat down beside her and stared her picture as well. “I miss him.” She whispered. “I miss him just as much as my parents.”
Luke frowned, watching this young girl break before him. “I’m sure he was a great guy.”
“He was.” Clementine slowly reached up and touched her hat, memories flooding back of all the times he helped her find it.
Luke gently reached up and placed his hand on top of her cap. “I won’t let anyone touch this cap. Okay?” He whispered, his face strict and serious.
Clementine studied his eyes, searching for any hint of a lie. Finding none, she nodded. “Thank you.”
“Anything for you and Lee.” He whispered, tapping her hat with a warm smile.
