"I know I can do it.""No, you can't. Not today." Luke, his voice exasperated and exhausted, claimed in the midst of packing a bag. Kenny sat at his side, absentmindedly passing him after bottles and weaponry while nose deep in a book. In reality, he wasn't helping at all seeing as Luke had set out all the supplies half an hour earlier. Kenny was merely passing it to him, so he could tell Sarita he was 'playing nice'.
Clementine huffed, arms crossed. "It's not difficult. I can do it."
"No Clem, you need to stay here." Luke breathed through a sigh, zipping the bag closed and turning to face the child. "It's too dangerous out there right now."
"I can handle myself."
"You being able to handle yourself isn't what I'm worried about." Luke groaned, a hand rolling over his face. Desperately, searching for someone to join his side, he turned to the last person he would have suspected. "Kenny, back me up here?"
Kenny, peeking his eyes just barely over his book, shifted his stare between the two. In response, after a moment of hesitation, Kenny merely shrugged. "She's been through worse."
"That's a horrible mentality to have."
"You're just getting wood, Luke." Kenny claimed through an eye roll. "You're not headed to war. I don't see why she can't go with you."
Luke, eyes wide, waved his hands at his sides. "You're kidding, right? It's dangerous out there. It practically is a war."
Kenny sighed, tossing his book to the centre of the table and giving Clementine a pitying stare. After a brief moment of studying the child, he turned back. "I'm not denying that it's dangerous, I just know these woods. I also know that Clementine won't be an issue."
"I never said she would be." Luke countered, arms crossed in defiance. "It's the hoards of walkers that are an issue." His gaze shifted back to the child, one of pity and remorse. "I'm sorry, Clem. I can't let you come this time."
Clementine huffed, arms crossing over her chest in contempt. "I'm going. I can do it."
Luke's brows pressed, now in confusion rather than agitation. "Why are you so eager to go?"
"I've been stuck in this lodge for days." She groaned, arms fading back to her sides. "I want to do something. Now, that something is collecting firewood," gradually, she pushed on an impish smile. "With you."
Once again, Luke's face shifted to empathy. "I can't, Clem. It's bad out there these days."
Immediately her smug smirk was washed away, replaced with a bitter glare of discontent. "It's nothing I haven't handled before."
"No, Clementine." Luke pushed, his stare forceful. "I mean it. I'm not risking it." Finally, not willing to take any more of their back and forth, his attention turned for the door.
Clementine's hands balled into fists at her side, waiting patiently at the top of the staircase as Luke made his way down. Her lungs swelled, all the pleas she wished to give building inside of her. Of all people, she thought Luke would be the one to treat her like an adult. Yet here she was: being treated like a kid who couldn't hold her own.
Feeling her lungs snap, her lips threw themselves open and out thrust a scream so high-pitched, so startling, Luke tumbled down the last two steps and collapsed to his knees. His hands clapped themselves over his ears, turning to see where the horrifying noise was coming from. Spotting the child wailing, her lungs lurching with fury, he pushed himself to his feet and started up the stairs, the entire while loudly pleading for her to stop.
A hoard of adults came tumbling down from the second floor stairwell, clambering over one another as the unfamiliar screech ripped through the air. After all, they had never heard Clementine scream before, let alone like that.
"Christ Clem!" Luke whined, groaning the moment he reached the main floor. His desperate voice, now right before her, caused her to stop. Luke removed his hands from his ears, waving them as they physically hurt from clamping down so tightly on his ears. "I haven't heard an animal scream that high let alone a person."
Rebecca stood, arms outstretched, as if waiting for one of them to explain without prompting. When she didn't receive an answer, she spoke. "What's going on?"
Luke glanced down at the child, watching her silently clamp down on her tongue. Internally, he groaned. Externally, he merely crossed his arms. "I wouldn't let Clem come to get firewood with me."
Silence hung over the group. It was heavy, one that loomed with miscommunication.
Rebecca, breaking the silence, slowly blinked. "That's it?"
Luke hesitated, taking a general sweep over the group gathered before him. He attempted to read the room, but came back blank. "Yeah?" He claimed, drawing out the 'y'.
Sarita sighed. "Just bring her with you, Luke." She claimed, turning on her heels and returning to the kitchen where she was preparing dinner.
Luke threw his hands out at his sides, disbelief coursing through him. "You're kidding."
Rebecca shook her head. "If she wants to go, just bring her."
"It's dangerous out there."
"It's gonna be dangerous in here if we keep having her banshee wail bouncing off these walls." Rebecca retorted, hands firmly planted on her hips. Her eyes narrowed to slits, staring down the male before her. "Just bring her with you, Luke. You'll be with her and, if worse comes to worst, she can handle herself. You'll both be fine."
Luke scoffed, turning to Alvin in hopes that he would back him up. In return, he was met with a mere shrug. "Bring back lots. It's getting cold in here." With that, the couple started back up the stairs.
Watching as everyone departed, Luke's head fell into his hands, his fingertips pressing at the bridge of his nose. At his side, the successful child's arms remained crossed, beaming at the male refusing to look at her.
Finally, he sighed, removing his hand from his face. "Let's get going then."
Then, shrouded in bitter silence, the two departed, weapons in hand.
An hour passed and, with Kenny continuing to plow through his book, the front doors squeaked open. Cocking his head to the side, Kenny caught a glimpse of Clementine huffing up the stairs, her arms piled high with firewood. The axe was hung off the back of her pants, the handle swaying back and forth with each step. Behind her trudged Luke, shoulders slumped in defeat. Turning his head, Luke caught the self-righteous stare of the older male, smugly closing his book and sliding it onto the oak table.
Luke's brows furrowed. "Not. A word."
Kenny merely rolled his eyes, lifting his water bottle to his lips. "I told you she could do it."
Luke, back already turned to the male, started away. "Stuff it, old man."
