It was just a box. A simple, little box. But it seemed to cause a lot of panic.
She didn't think it was going to be a big deal. She brought it out from the storage room at the back of the lodge. Originally, she had been sent to look for extra cutlery, but she returned with so much more.
A box, the black text along the top reading "Cards Against Humanity".
"Luke, what kind of game is this?"
Luke turned, smiling tenderly down at the girl.
She held the box out to him.
His eyes widened as he did a spit-take of his coffee. He coughed, wiping his mouth dry in bewilderment.
"C-Clem, where did you get that?"
Clementine shrugged. "The storage room."
"Seriously?" Shock spat out as he spoke, snatching the box from her hands. He set it on the table, opening it and peeking hesitantly inside.
Sure enough, a long row of black and white cards laid neatly organized inside, almost as if they had been left untouched.
"What is it?"
Luke turned and gave her a weak smile, scratching the back of his head and tilting it back, hoping to distract himself from the tips of his ears burning red. "It's a game for adults."
"What is?"
Luke's heart was thumping so loudly in his ears he couldn't hear Kenny saunter into the room, his boots clomping against the floor as he made his way forwards.
Luke turned, offering a quick smile to male. Despite his best efforts, the two still weren't as close as they could be. Luke wasn't sure exactly what it was that was leaving them so distant. It could be their age difference, or the difference in the ways they lead. It could even be the fact that they were both seen as leaders of their respective groups, and now fought to lead their new joined one, however, Luke liked to think it had to do with the child to his left.
The moment they rolled up to the lodge and Kenny planted his eyes upon Clementine his eyes lit up like stars; as if the little girl was his world. His world which had been left in the hands of individuals who had previously locked her in a walker infested cabin.
That didn't seem to put them in his good books.
Luke wandered out of his daydreams and flashed a desperate smile towards the male. Clearly noted due to Kenny's step back at the horrifying grin.
"Oh, we're just talking about--"
"Hey," Clementine cooed from beside him. "Why does this card say Pacman guzzling--"
"Okay!" Luke snatched it, stuffing the card back into the box. Clearly she had snuck a peek while he was busy thinking of ways to plead for Kenny's assistance. But there seemed to be no going back now.
Kenny raised an eyebrow. If he caught wind of what Clementine had found, Luke would be slaughtered alive. Especially now that she had snatched a card from inside.
"What's going on?"
Clementine took a small step forwards, her face still and monotone. "I found a card game in the back. We're looking at it."
Kenny smiled. "A card game, huh? Which one?"
"Not one that's important!" Luke called, voice hoarse and pleading.
Kenny shot him a glare and turned to Clementine, nodding and urging her to speak.
"Cards Against Humanity."
Kenny coughed, stumbling backwards.
Before he could say a word, expressing his shock or his disapproval, other members of the group slowly began to tumble in.
"What's going on?" Rebecca asked, hands on her hips as she waddled forwards. "We heard a girlish screech and came out."
Luke furrowed his brows, ears burning in embarrassment. "That was me talking." Clearly from his attempt to distract Kenny.
"That would explain it." Nick teased, walking out from behind and jabbing his friend in the shoulder.
Luke pouted. "Knock it off."
"What's happening?" Sarita poked her head out, smiling kindly and walking to Kenny's side, placing a sweet hand on his shoulder.
Kenny turned to Luke, shooting him an urgent gaze to fix what had been started.
He rubbed the back of his neck, pleading for the floor to eat him alive. "Clem found a card game in the back."
"A card game?" Sarita asked, eyes beaming with excitement. "Well, why don't we play it?"
Nick turned to the table, studying the box that had been left there. He scoffed, a gleeful smirk working its way onto his lips. "No way."
Luke closed his eyes in defeat.
"We got Cards Against Humanity!"
Rebecca's eyes widened, a smile of absolute hilarity on her cheeks. Sarita sat in bewilderment, eyes wide and cheeks tinted with rose.
Nick laughed hysterically. "Can we still play? Can we give it a shot?"
"Nick!" Sarita shot desperately. "There are kids here!"
"So? They don't need to play."
"Hey, what if I want to play?"
Kenny's head collapsed into his hands.
Somehow, suddenly, the game was underway.
Nick had made the argument over the 10 minutes they spent bickering about it that it would be a good de-stressing tool for the adults. Clem and Sarah could have use of the living area and the rest of them could gather at the table for some laughs. Ones that they desperately needed. Ones that were lacking in their lives.
Somehow, it worked.
Every adult in their party gathered at the table while Clementine and Sarah sat at the couches before the fireplace.
"...obesity."
Clementine's head tuned up, glancing over at the table as the group of adults laughed gleefully. Sarita had a hand over her mouth, covering her reddening cheeks and giddy grin.
Clem pouted, sighing unhappily.
"Why aren't we allowed to play with them?"
Sarah's voice snagged Clementine's interest. She frowned. "It's an adult game."
"That's no fun."
Clementine glanced over, eyes daring and bold as she watched them play, watching Nick take a black card with glee.
"It really isn't." She mumbled softly, before smirking, crouching and drawing closer to the team.
Nick cleared his throat. "What is Batman's guilty pleasure?" He smirked, setting the card against the table and watching the rest of his team search their cards for the best answer.
Clem had snuck forwards, hiding just beside Luke and glancing past his arm, studying his hand.
She had watched them play long enough to know how to do it herself. It didn't take long to catch onto what they were doing or how to play properly.
Clementine's eyes studied intently before standing, lifting one and planting it against the table proudly.
"Dead parents."
There was silence. And shock.
Followed by howling laughter.
"Clem!" Nick cried between gasping for breath. "You're a natural at this!"
She grinned, proudly setting her hands on her hips. "Does this mean I get to play now?"
Sarita rubbed her teary eyes, gentle chuckles escaping as she did so. "I don't see why not. It's all in good fun, right Kenny?"
Kenny stared at the child and gave a small shrug, a proud grin spreading across his face with a defeated sigh. "Why not?" She had already been exposed to enough at that point. A simple card-game wouldn't hurt.
"What about Sarah?" Carlos asked, watching his daughter draw closer in curiousity.
"Let her play too, why not?" Nick asked, sliding a black card towards Luke and letting him place it atop his pile. "You and her can share and Luke and Clem can share."
Carlos signed and rubbed his forehead. "This is a bad idea."
Luke smirked. "Did good ideas ever make good stories?"
And then, they were off.
Kenny and Sarita, Rebecca and Alvin, Carlos and Sarah, Luke and Clem, and Nick.
The battle was on.
"Sarah, take a black card. You can call next."
"Me?" She beamed at Nick's command.
"Yeah go for it, why not."
Carlos clenched his hands together nervously as his daughter reached into the pile and cleared her throat.
"What ended my last relationship?"
Luke could visually see Carlos cringe, however, he smirked and turned to Clementine. "Pick one, you can play this round."
Clementine beamed, selecting a card and tossing it into the growing pile in the centre of the table.
Sarah grinned, glanced through the cards laid before her and clearing her throat to read them.
"Peeing a little bit, children on leashes, Nazis,"
Kenny almost spit out his coffee, but she continued.
"And homeless people."
Nick smirked. "Now, pick the one that you think is the funniest."
Sarah adjusted her glasses, reading over each of them once more. "Peeing a little bit."
Kenny and Sarita laughed in glee.
Rebecca slapped her hand on the table, tossing her cards down. "Dammit. I thought "Nazis" was a good one."
"That was you?" Carlos spat.
Alvin shrugged. "I told her to play the "balls" card but she refused."
Sarah turned to her friend. "Clementine, which card did you play?" Luke glanced at his partner eagerly, grinning with pride.
She glanced between the two of them slowly. "Children on leashes."
"You are a child!" Luke joked, poking the back of her head playfully.
"Yeah, a child who's still better than Nick."
Nick frowned, his smirk dashed at the words. "Well fine then, I'm choosing next." He snatched a card off of the black deck, scanning it and grinning uncontrollably. "It's a pity kids these days are getting involved in blank?"
The group glanced down at their decks, surveying what each of them had. Eventually everyone tossed one in except for Sarah, staring confused down at the cards in her palm.
Sarah held one up to her father. "Dad, what's "queefing" mean?"
Luke and Nick choked, covering their mouths and turning away while the two other couples watched the scenario before them with amusement.
Carlos scanned the crowd, shooting a glare at all of them. "I think that's enough for today."
"Oh, come on!" Luke teased. "You haven't even played a final card yet."
"Fine," He tossed a random card from his pile into the mix and gently took Sarah's hand, leading her towards the stairs.
Nick lifted the cards, scanning each of the ones thrown in. Nick burst into laughter, rubbing his forehead in amazement.
"Clem, what card did you toss in?" Luke asked, leaning his head down to hear her without removing his gaze from his best friend in hysterics.
"Multiple stab wounds."
Luke smirked, lowering a hand and giving her a quick high-five filled with pride and joy.
Nick leaned back in his chair, giving a brief cough. "If it's any consolation Carlos," He called after him, watching from below as he opened his daughter's bedroom door. "You win."
Carlos raised an eyebrow.
""Fingering" will forever be the supreme answer."
Carlos scowled, turning and quickly walking down the hallway, vanishing into darkness and closing his bedroom door.
A hand slammed on the table. "Dammit. I thought "sperm whales" was a good one."
"Just give it up, Rebecca." Nick laughed, rubbing his eyes. "Carlos is the champion."
