Clementine and Luke

This was suggested by mo3rosewhite and takes place during season 2 episode 2. This path is when you choose an option that causes Nick to die, and Clementine needs to break the bad news to Luke that his best friend is gone.

"Clem…" Luke started nervously, glancing from side to side as he studied everyone from their group. They had just escaped Carver’s camp, Luke was finally able to get everyone out and they had been on the move for at least a few hours. Luke finally decided that it was ok to rest for a while, and while doing so he noticed that someone was missing.
Someone important.
“Hm?” Clementine mumbled softly, glancing up from her legs.
“Where’s Nick?”
Clementine could feel her chest tighten at his question. Oh god, how does she answer this? There’s no easy way to say it…should she just blurt it out?
“Uhm..” Kenny started with a small cough. Clementine quickly turned to him and gave him a pityful gaze, as if saying that she wanted to break the news. Kenny’s solemn face slowly faded into a forced smile as he stood and ushered the others to move forwards. “Let’s give them some space…” He mumbled to all of them.
After suspiciously watching everyone leave Luke tuned to Clementine with a more urgent expression. “Clem,” he started again, probing her to speak.
After some nervous hesitation, Clementine sighed and spoke her first few words.”Nick…didn’t…make it.” She whispered softly. Her head shook as her eyes remained firmly on the ground. “He got bit by a walker as we were leaving the ski lodge…that was it. He was gone.”
Moments upon moments of silence passed until Clementine finally got up enough courage to raise her head. The image before her was rather surprising. Luke didn’t really have an expression. He stared blankly at the ground, his stare cold and meaningless.
“Gone, huh?” His voice whispered, gruff and hoarse. Another moment silence fell over them before he stood and walked to the other end of their small resting area.
“Luke—”
“I should’ve been there.” He grumbled to himself, resting his forehead against a tree so his back was the only thing exposed to the young girl. “If I hadn’t run off then I could have stayed, and this wouldn’t have happened.” With every passing second his words grew more intense and angry.
“L-Luke…” Clementine whispered, taking a cautious step closer to him. She would never admit it, but his attitude was starting to scare him. What was he going to do?
Luke whipped around to see Clementine standing slightly closer to him, his angry gaze falling upon her own. His hands balled into fists causing Clementine’s body to tremble. What was be about to do?
Swiftly, he took a step forwards towards Clementine and turned around to slam his fist into the tree in anger.
“Ugh!” He cried, punching once more with the same fist.
Then there was silence.
He stood patiently, his hand resting against the rough tree bark as his breathing grew uneven and wavy. Solemnly walking towards a rock, he sat down and buried his head into his hands. “What the hell have I done…” He whispered.
For the first time ever, Clementine actually saw Luke cry. She had seen him be angry, scared and even pitiful before, but she had never seen him cry. She could hear the muffled broken sobs fall out of his mouth and into his hands, as if he was trying desperately for Clementine to not hear him.
But she did.
Without an explanation or warning, she stepped forwards and wrapped him tightly in a hug, her arms wrapping around his neck the best she could. “Luke…” She started softly, not wanting to speak too loudly. “Nick wouldn’t want you to be like this. He would want you to—” Before Clementine could finish, Luke’s arms wrapped around her tiny figure, almost pulling her onto the rock with his force. “He would want you to carry on.” She finished.
Luke was silent now, his steady breathing landing against Clementine’s tattered shirt shoulder. “Thanks Clem…” He mumbled, pulling away and giving a small strained smile to her. “For a kid you’re pretty good at this.” He commented, pushing him self up with a chuckle.
“Thanks.” She said with a small shrug.
Luke smirked down at the girl and gave her a small pat on the back. “Let’s get going, the group is probably waiting for us.”
Luke began to walk a step ahead of Clementine as if he was her guard. Without much thought, Clementine approached him and gently grabbed his hand in her own. Luke stared down at her in curiosity for a moment before smiling and looking ahead.
He was the first person she held hands with besides Lee, but for some reason it still gave her the sweet feeling she got when Lee held her hand.
