Two days. 48 hours.
"Luke, you need to sleep." Sarita's tired voice filled the room as her hand limply slapped against the countertop in the cabin's kitchen. "You've been up with her for every moment we've moved her here. You need to get some rest."
"I can't." He snarled, a glare piercing
Sarita's body as he turned to study her.
She had bags under her eyes, she had tugged an extra sweater on, and she was holding a cup of hot water to keep her body and hands warm. She look worried, tired, disheveled. He turned to glance back at the counter he was leaning against and closed his eyes.
Clementine was resting against the table, her body wrapped tightly in a blanket and her head resting above a plain white pillow. Her arm was bandaged up and wound in a sling from where she had been shot in her upper arm. The bullet had torn right through her arm and all of the blood loss has resulted in her going unconscious and resting in this coma-like state. Since they didn't have any other blood to give her and no way to make sure they were giving her the right blood type, they could only sit, and wait, and pray.
"It's my fault that this happened. I'm waiting here with her."
Sarita sighed. Nobody wanted to admit aloud that there was a high chance that the child wouldn't wake up from her deep sleep. And if that was the case, they didn't want to be around when she turned. But nobody had the heart or stomach to confess this statement aloud. Especially to the man who refused to leave her side.
Kenny had been finding a different way to cope. He had spent his time in the living room chugging down all the alcohol that the ski lodge had to offer. From time to time he would drift off to sleep only to wake up again, finish another bottle or two, and sleep once more.
For two days it had been like this. Verging on the edge of three.
"Luke, this wasn't your fault."
"You don't understand!" His fists slammed against the surface in front of him as he buried his head into the cool metal. "She didn't want to go into those woods in the first place but I was the one that promised her that I would look out for her and make sure that she was okay." He shook his head. "I don't know why we were so eager to get away from here. We should've...we should've taken more time to make a plan instead of just...rushing." He sighed, leaning his head back and closing his eyes, allowing his sweaty palms to run over his stressed and exhausted features. "Because look where it got us. Look what trying to run from Carver did to us. Did to HER."
Sarita remained silent, watching the man writhe in his seat as he searched for forgives and self-acceptance. But a part of Sarita knew that that would come if Clem woke up. If she didn't, then who knew what would happen to the tormented man. "Can I at least get you some food?"
"Not hungry."
"You haven't been hungry for two days."
"Can you blame me?"
Sarita gave an internal sigh. Not only was Clementine slowly loosing her light of life, but Luke was forcing his own out of his body. He was allowing himself to die. Without another word the raven-haired woman turned away and slipped out of the room.
Luke gave a shaky sigh, sliding his head back down against the surface and allowing the top of his hair to brush against the female's blanket. He had done this. And the guilt that dwelled inside of his chest, the weights pushing down in his back, the agonizing repetition of her screaming pounding in his head, would never go away. He didn't do his job. He was going to lose her. And it was all his fault.
He could still picture the moment so clearly. The group had been trying to get a move on since Carver and his men were drawing closer. Luke started in front, hand on his gun in front of him and Clementine beside him. He was in the process of hacking down some vines that were in their way when a sudden snap caught his attention. Clementine had been wandering a tripped on a loose rock and had snapped a twig in the process. Without warning gunfire in the distance could be heard. Whether it was survivors or Carver's group they didn't know. But Clementine's arm was pierced with a bullet causing to her scream in pain. Immediately Luke had lifted her and raced back to the cabin. He could have been the one. Clementine was so small. He should have kept an eye on her while he was working. But he didn't. And look what had happened.
There a push against the male's head which brought him to slowly look up. The blanket. Her blanket. Was moving. Maybe not a lot yes but it was moving. Slowly. But surely.
Luke's eyes widened, his palms shook, his heart raced. Plenty of little things were happening that was snagging his attention. Her eyes gently began to twitch. Her arm was shifting in her blanket. Tiny soft, almost silent groans were lifting up from her throat and into the air.
Until finally, her eyes peeled themselves open. The brilliant shade of gold filling up the man's gaze.
She was alive.
He gave a small cough, stumbling backwards for a moment as he panted and laughed softly attempting to gain back his sanity. "C-Clem? Clem!"
Clementine remained calm and quiet, her eyes sliding from each wall of the room while the male beside her tried to calm his breathing. "Luke? Are you okay?"
He slid forwards planted his lips sweetly on the cold child's forehead before pulling away and placing his hands on the sides of her cheeks. "Yeah." He breathed, tears building on the corners of his eyes. "Yeah, Clem. I am now."
"What happened? My arm is sore..."
"Sh sh it's okay. You're okay, Clem. You're safe. Just rest." He could feel the little tears racing down his cheeks in a battle to see who could be the first to reach his chin. "Oh Clem, thank God. We were so worried."
"I'm okay though, right?"
"Yes, Clem. Yes, oh god yes. You're okay." He pecked her head once more. "You're okay from now on."
