"I bet you two of your pudding cups I can fit my head between those bars."

Mariana raised a brow her brother's way, lowering her headphones. "Are you serious?"

Gabe smirked. "Always about pudding."

Mari smirked, considering the possibility. Much to the dismay of the teens, they'd arrived at the junkyard a few days earlier. While it was a goldmine for Javi and Kate when it came to loot, for the kids, the only thing the location was brimming with was boredom. Maybe that was why Gabe's proposal seemed like fun. They had to make their own fun, and the single chunk of a metal fence was the best they had to work with. Maybe tossing around some bets could serve as some entertainment.

After accepting, she immediately regretted it.

"This is a horrible idea."

"You bet me," Gabe scoffed. "You didn't think it was a terrible idea until you realized you're gonna lose." Mariana scrunched her nose at her brother's statement but said nothing. She hated that he was right. She had no defense.

"Here we go," Gabe said, cracking his knuckles. "Prepare to be amazed." Gabe positioned himself by the railing, taking a deep breath, cracking his neck and shaking out his sweaty palms. Then, counting to three, he went for it. In one swift motion, he pried the bars further open, squeezed his head between them, and released.

"Ha!" He cried, adjusting his weight on his knees, trying to smirk back up at Mariana and failing. She stood to his side — now out of his range of vision — arms crossed and bitter knowing she had lost.

Her next two pudding cups needed to go to him and, knowing Gabe, he was going to eat them right in front of her. She could feel her shoulders slump, her energy and excitement collapsing to the floor. "Yay," she groaned, wanting to make her displeasure prominent.

Gabe continued to beam, smiling and chuckling. As stupid and silly as it was, he felt accomplished; strong even. It was such a stupid bet, but winning gave him a rush of excitement and strength. He felt like he could do anything. He felt like he had asserted himself as a true bigger brother — stronger and bolder.

"Well," Mariana groaned, turning the other way and stretching. "I told Kate I'd help her with inventory, so I guess I'll go do that now." Her nose scrunched. "Then I can fetch you your precious desserts." She'd assumed that behind her, Gabe was squirming out so that by the time she flipped around, he'd be standing upright again.

That wasn't happening. Instead, a series of faint grunts and clangs sounded behind her — sounds of hands pushing against metal and a body wheezing to be free. Mariana tuned just in time to see Gabe's head still locked between the bars, the sides of his skull catching on either side of the gap he was wedged in.

"Uh," Gabe sighed, continuing to squirm in his spot. His legs shifted and his shoulders tensed but his trapped head didn't move. "I'm stuck."

His sister raised a brow. "You're what?"

"Stuck."

"Stuck," she repeated after him, eyebrows falling, skeptical stance not shifting.

"Yes," Gabe could feel his heart sink, his chest clench, his skin pale. Of course this was happening, and after he did something cool and strong, too. "Can you," he cut himself off with a sigh.
