Clementine and Luke
I love these two a little too much, so I had to write another fanfic about them. This takes place at the end of season 2 episode 2. When Clementine climbs up the ladder right once the group reaches the ski lodge, what would happen if she actually did fall?
"Do you see anything?" Luke called after a minute. It was Clementine’s job to head up onto of the small platform and see if there was anyone or anything heading their way, and to report back to Luke who was patiently waiting below.
“There are some lights on the other end of the bridge….I see two of them.”
“Can you see who’s holding them?”
After straining her eyes for a moment, she frowned and slid the binoculous back into her bag. “No. They’re too far away and it’s too dark to tell.”
After watching for a few more minutes, Clementine turned back towards the ladder. “Hey Luke?” Before descending she glanced down the ladder only to see that Luke had left from where he was originally standing and headed back over to the group to tell them the new development. “Luke?” She called again to no avail. He was too preoccupied with getting a plan ready with the others. With a small nervous and frustrated sigh, she gripped tightly onto the ladder and began her decent.
She had only walked down three or four rungs before she felt her foot lose a bit of balance and suddenly felt three large snaps. The two rungs she was standing on snapped, as well as the one she was about to step onto.
“Ah!” She quickly gripped onto a higher rung and held on for dear life. She could feel rung bending with ever passing second. With a small cry of pain she glanced down to realize her leg had a long cut from the metal that had broken. Feeling the pole she was holding onto bend more and more she desperately turned to the group. “LUKE!” She screamed in fear, trying to adjust her weight. Her small scream echoed through the woods around them, grabbing the attention of the others.
Finally hearing her cries, Luke turned and in an instant he was pushing through the other members of their group trying to reach the ladder. “Clem!” He cried, charging for the young girl.
Just before Luke could reach her, the bar she was holding onto snapped causing Clementine to fly backwards and plummet to the ground.
“Luke!” Her fragile voice screamed, peircing the air like a bullet.
Just before her body made violent contact with the ground Luke jumped towards her, wrapping his arms around her injured frame and used his body as a shield. His side slammed against the forest floor with a grunt, his body wrapped around her smaller one. They remained in this state for a while, Luke panting heavily while Clementine shook violently. Luke’s gripped tightened around her small frame upon feeling this, as if hugging her tighter could make the memory disappear. As Luke hugged her close his eyes opened to see the red liquid oozing from her leg.
“Where did you go?” Clem’s shakey voice finally spoke, her hands shaking against the fabric of his shirt.
The words caused his chest to tighten. He promised her. He promised he would catch her if she fell—if anything happened. And here they were, the promise shattered around them. “Clem I am so sorry…” He said softly.
Clem gave a soft whimper, the memory still fresh in her mind. Clem had been in near-death experiences before, but this time was different. She always used to fall out of her treehouse, but her father always used to catch her. This time, she didn’t know if anyone was going to catch her. But he did. “But you still caught me…” She whispered softly, as if now she was consoling Luke.
Luke praised himself for that much. Had he not caught her—no, he couldn’t think like that. He would be killing himself internally for being so foolish. He continued to feel her whimpers grow louder and louder, tears now apparent against his shirt. “Shh Clem.” Luke said, sitting up with her in his lap. The others were rummaging through their bags, a mad search to find bandages for the young girl. “Clem, calm down. You’re alright now. I’m not letting you go anytime soon.”
Little sniffles were all that was left as the others approaching and began to wrap up her leg. Clementine refused to leave her spot where she was sitting in Luke’s lap, comfort and warmth coming from him.
Satisfied with his work, Kenny stood. “There you go. You’ll be good as new in a few days.” Clementine nodded, still not moving herself from where she was resting.
“Come on, let’s get you inside.” Luke said, hoisting her up in his arms. Normally, Clementine would grow irritated and ask to walk. But this time she allowed it.
Reaching her room in the ski lodge, Luke set her down on the bed and stared absentmindedly at her injured leg.
“I’m fine Luke.” Clementine said quietly, laying on her side to face him.
“It’s my fault Clem. It’s my fault you’re hurt, and I’m sorry.” Clementine stared at him with an emotionless gaze, as if trying to see if he was sincere.
“It’s fine Luke. You caught me.” Her voice was so soft, almost silent. Her eyes closed after her few words as her breathing began slower and calmer.
As her body began to get dragged away to a land of slumber, Luke stared at her and smiled. She was still a little girl, and he forgot that far too often. He brushed a single strand of hair away from her eyes and smiled, the only sound heard in the room was his whisper.
“I’ll catch you from now on.”
