"Dude," Louis scoffed. "Be realistic.""I am."
"That's just sad, then."
Marlon rolled his eyes and fought the urge to sock his best friend in the shoulder. He was always a pain when it came to girls, but especially when it came to one in particular. The girl who'd caught both of their eyes since the day she'd been carried into Ericson: Clementine. "I think I have a chance with her," he said.
"Yeah, a fat one." Louis tossed back. "I don't think you're her type, dude."
"And you are?"
"I'm everyone's type."
This time, Marlon let himself roll his eyes. Louis earned it. "Well, I think you're wrong. I think we'd make a great couple."
Louis smirked. "Bet."
"Bet?"
"Yeah," he said, shrugging, as if the point he was making was obvious. "I bet that out of the two of us, Clementine would date me over you."
"You're not seriously going to pin an entire relationship on a bet, are you?" Marlon asked, arms crossed over his chest. "Because that's just cruel."
"Not a relationship," he said, arms crossing defensively. "I'm not a monster. Something smaller than that." Then, he smirked, his tense shoulders relaxing. "A kiss." Marlon raised a brow but said nothing, waiting for Louis to elaborate on the plan he'd already formulated. "The first one of the two of us to get a kiss from Clem wins."
Marlon scoffed. "Wins what?"
Louis smirked cheekily. "Her heart?" Marlon stared at him. "Okay, fine, they win the right to go after her without interference."
Marlon shifted his weight to his other leg, studying Louis as he considered it. First and foremost, he debated whether Clem would be mad if she found out. Probably not — if anything she'd think it was funny and lame — though, he also hoped she didn't feel as if she was an object they were fighting over. She was more precious than that, they just needed help deciding who "deserved" to be hers.
Finally, Marlon sighed. "Fine. You have a deal."
And they shook on it.
"We begin tomorrow," Louis said, turning from the front yard and starting for Ericson's front doors. "Start making your battle plans now!"
All Marlon did was smirk, cross his arms, and chuckle. Louis was really something else, especially when he set his mind to something. Sure enough, the next morning when Marlon trotted out after a peaceful night's rest, he spotted Louis already putting on the moves.
"So, Clem," he was leaning in closer from where he was seated beside her. Clementine was facing inward, having a conversation with Violet across the table, while Louis faced outward, elbows propped on the table behind him, legs crossed, and smirk-wide. "What are your plans for the day?"
Clem raised a brow. Across the table, Violet smirked and leaned into one of her palms to get more comfortable. "Probably wood collecting with Vi,"
Louis scoffed, arms folding. "You're not gonna come hunting with me?"
