“Hold it!” Kenny snarled, jolting his gun towards the small figure that was making its way up the hill.
Hearing the male’s yell, indicating that he had seen something, Clementine and Luke dashed towards the front door of the ski lodge.
“Kenny, what’s going on?” Clementine demanded, sliding down the hill and next to her companion.
“There’s a person down there. And they aren’t listening to my orders.” Tightening the grip around his trigger, Kenny began to aim his weapon.
“Don’t. Shoot.” Luke demanded, slowly sneaking closer.
“I’ll shoot if I goddamn want to.” He snarled back, causing Clementine’s ‘swear-glare’ to go off in his direction.
“Kenny, don’t.” Hearing Clem set him straight however, Kenny groaned and lowered his gun ever-so-slightly.
As the mystery figure drew closer, Luke’s eyes widened. “It’s a kid.”
The three words snatched Clementine’s attention more than anything. While Sarah was technically a kid, her father almost refused to allow her to leave her tiny bedroom in the lodge. Maybe with this kid, she would actually have a chance to do something.
“D-Don’t shoot!” The quiet voice cried, stopping as he finally spotted the gun in Kenny’s arms. The tiny male raised his arms and gave a tiny frown. “My name’s Wince. I don’t want any harm.”
Walking around past the two adults, Clementine stood slightly to the right of the group as she attempted to study the figure. He looked about twelve, maybe a year of two younger. In these days, you couldn’t tell anymore. One day, or even once sight, could age you fifty years in a minute. Mentally or physically. Sometimes both.
“What do you want?” Luke yelled, taking a step forwards, hoping to be a small pace in front of Clementine.
“I just need some food. I thought this place would have some. I didn’t know it had people in it, I swear!”
Noticing Kenny’s growing tension and the locking of his gun, Clem growled. “Kenny. Put it down.”
After glancing between the newcomer and his teammates for a few moments, the man finally grunted and set his gun on the ground in between him and Luke.
Studying the male with a few small tilts and turns of her head, Clem glanced up at Luke. “What do you think we should do?” Glazing over the male with her golden eyes, she shrugged. “He doesn’t seem like a threat.” In fact, to her she was hoping he would become a friend.
“Does anyone ever?” Kenny shot back, crossing his arms in anger at the disarming of his weapon.
“He’s just a kid. He’s all alone.” Luke grumbled, turning his head as to speak to only the beared-male, and turning back to the young boy his expression of frustration melted into a smile. “Come on closer, boy. We’ll go get you something to eat.”
With a joyous grin, the small male finished his short trek up the rest of the mountain, and took a seat against a tiny wooden bench near Kenny.
“Clem, do you mind going to grab the food?” Luke asked, keeping his body faced to the young boy but turning his head towards Clem to speak. “We’re..”
“Going to get some answers.” Kenny scoffed, walking around to the boys left side and crossing his arms as he studied him before taking a seat. Luke rolled his eyes in irritation, and was about to speak when the young girl’s voice cut him off.
“Yeah, I got it. I think you might need to stay out here. Just in case.”
Luke gave a small smirk and nod. “Thanks kiddo.”
Leaving and returning in less than ten minutes, Clementine carried a small box with 5 cans of peaches, and 3 cans of beans.
Kenny jolted to his feet as he noticed the box’s contents, causing him to grumble and stand. “That’s a bit much for one kid alone, don’t you think?”
Clementine shrugged, shifting the box in her grasp, sliding some cans around as she did so. “Matthew gave these to me to give out. He said we have plenty of food to share.”
Wince smiled sweetly, while Kenny grumbled in annoyance. The kindness of this group, while genuine, was going to get them all killed one day. He didn’t want to stick around for that day to happen. “Fine.” He grumbled, crossing his arms in anger. “Give it to ‘em. I need to go talk to Matthew.” Brushing past the young girl, Kenny started towards the kitchen.
Clementine and Luke turned to watch as he stomped away, a sigh escaping from Luke’s lips. He walked closer to his friend and placed a hand on her shoulder. “He just needs some time to cool off. He’ll be fine.” He said softly. Clementine glanced up at her companion and nodded, a weak smile sliding onto her previously worried features.
Hearing a small click behind them caused Clementine to turn around. Was that Wince?
Bam!
Immense pain shot through Clementine’s shoulder, screaming out in agony and falling to the ground.
“Clem! Oh god!” Luke cried, kneeling down towards her limp body.
The young boy, Wince, smirked as he lowered the gun Kenny had dropped, and tossed it to his side. Dashing over to the limp two, the boy grabbed the box, stuffed the cans that had started rolling down the hill into it, and dashed back towards the forest, kicking up dirt with his little feet as he ran.
Like growled and stood. “You little jerk! GET BACK HERE!” He yelled, grabbing the gun he had tossed aside and aiming it appropriately. He was only hoping to injure him; maybe shoot his leg to stop him. He didn’t want to kill the kid after all. He wanted some answers.
Hearing the crunching of footsteps behind him, the gun was snatched from his hand and with one shot, Kenny nailed the boy in the back of the head.
Luke’s plan just got tossed out the window.
With an angry yell, the bearded man turned towards the injured child and rolled her over onto her back for more comfort.
“Clem, Carlos is on his way.” Luke rushed and stumbled as he spoke, taking a seat on the opposite side of the girl and attempting to view the wound without causing too much pain for her.
With a groan, Clementine nodded and watched as blood rolled down the sides of her arm. “Owch.” She grumbled, her head flopping back.
Kenny snarled as he glanced in the direction of the now-dead child, watched as his limp body rested in the grass with cans of food rolling down the hill beside him. “Son of a bitch…” He growled.
“He’s gone now. That’s one less problem to worry about.” Luke said sadly. They had just killed a kid. Something about that just felt so wrong. So dirty.
“This is why we can’t just hand out food like this is a damn buffet!” Kenny snarled, causing Clem to cough and speak.
“Hey!” Her urgency grabbed both of the males’ attention. “We’ll just be more careful next time something like this happens.” As she spoke, Kenny and Luke rested her against one of the large rocks outside so Carlos could have a better view of the wound and how to treat it.
Finally seeing the doctor wander closer to the rock, he began to examine the wound and get his tools ready to remove the bullet.
“What do you mean?” Luke asked, taking some of the medical supplies Carlos had brought out and got it ready for use.
Clementine gave a small smirk. “We’ll need to check them for weapons.”
“Then?” Luke probed.
“Send them on their way before they can do anything.”
She would learn that lesson sooner rather than later.
Thanks to Carver.
