“Clem.” Kenny growled sternly. “Lie down.”
“But I need to help you guys.”
“I think we can manage for a day without you.”
Clem raised an eyebrow at her bearded friend, skepticism lacing every feature on her face. As much as the majority of her group liked to claim that they were adults, really they all acted like children. Or at least, had the skills of them.
Clementine had done more for the group on the way to the ski lodge then they had probably done through the whole apocalypse. Not only was she on watch for walkers constantly, but she shut off the wind turbine, spotted the lodge, calmed down and walked with Sarah when she needed support, she helped Nick cope, and helped Luke fight. She did more to help the group than they could all do alone.
Kenny glanced away and sighed. “Okay anyways,” he began quickly changing the subject matter. “You just need to rest. Relax, don’t worry about anything.”
Clementine’s cautious gaze clearly wasn’t enough to send the message that this was the last thing she wanted to do, but after a while she laid down and began to rest.
After napping for what felt like hours, but in reality was only 40 minutes, Clementine sat up and groaned. However, shuffling and angry voices caught her attention before she could check the time and drift back to peaceful slumber.
What on earth was going on downstairs?
Deciding to disobey Kenny’s orders, Clem stood and slipped out of her bedroom door, being careful as to make sure it didn’t make a noise as she did so.
Once she reached the bottom of the stairs, she crept forwards and towards the source m of the noises; the kitchen.
“Rebecca, can you please just shut up!” Luke’s voice scolded, causing Clementine to jump. She had seen Luke get angry before, but never like that. He hardly ever yelled.
“Stuff it, Luke. You know damn well I’m making a good point.”
“No, you aren’t!” Kenny retorted, shockingly taking Luke’s side for once. That in itself was startling.
“Look, Clementine is sick. You do know what we had to do to the last person who got sick, don’t you?”
“…”
Silence.
“This isn’t like that.” Luke grumbled, taking a few steps in a direction as Clem heard shoes on tile waver his voice.
The child slowly crept up to the door and peeked her eye through a tiny crack in order to get a better glance of what was going on. Rebecca and Carlos were on one side of an island and Kenny and Luke were on the other, while Nick stood awkwardly at the back and in the middle of it all.
“She can’t help us. What are we supposed to do?” Carlos demanded, anger striking his features.
“We wait until she gets better.” Luke retorted.
“But who knows how long that will take? By then, Carver may have already found us.”
“What are you trying to say?” Luke’s eyebrow raised as he leaned forwards towards the two. They couldn’t be thinking what he was thinking, could they?
“She’s useless, Luke. We need to get rid of her. She’ll only hold us back or, even worse, make the rest of us sick.” Carlos claimed with a firm nod.
Clementine gave a quiet gasp.
“Or should could be bitten.”
“She’s not bitten!” Luke cried, slamming his hands down onto the table in complete fury.
“We are not going to do a damn thing until that little girl can move again.”
“She can’t do anything to help us right now. We’re wasting precious daylight!”
“She’s only going to infect the rest of us. Sarah is in no condition to fight an illness. Clementine can’t do a single thing that’s useful to the group right now.”
Hearing a creak echo through the room, the groups eyes were drawn to a little girl standing in shock in their kitchen doors, her golden eyes shadowed with tears.
“Clementine…” Kenny whispered in hurt. His body turned to face the young girl, attempting to block everyone else out.
She had heard everything.
“I’m sorry.” She said quietly, trying to keep her voice under control. “I…” She glanced up and studied the expressions of all the people in the room. Luke and Kenny looked hurt, reaching out to her and hoping they could help, while Rebecca and Carlos just seemed skeptical with a hunt of guilt glistening in their eyes. “I’m just sorry.” Covering her face with one of her hands, Clementine took off in the other direction making a beeline for the glass doors that would lead her out and away from the horrid building. Grabbing her axe on her way out, she bolted towards the forest, just wanting to escape from it all.
“Clementine!” Kenny screamed, starting for the doors after her with Luke on his tail. As he pushed open the glass doors, she was already more than halfway towards the forest.
“I’ll go after her.” Luke muttered, grabbing his sword and sliding it into his holder before taking off after the girl.
Hearing footsteps behind him, Kenny snarled and turned to face the two reasons that Clem had fled in the first place. “I hope your fucking happy.” He growled. “Get the hell out of my face.” He yelled, pointing towards the living room area, and reluctantly, they dispersed.
Clem’s feet pounded against the gravel, running as fast as her legs could carry her. She would stumble every now and then to let a cough and a sniffle escape, but never slowed her pace. Not even for a moment.
Why did everything happen to her? She had done so much for them, and this is how they repaid her?
But a sudden groan from her side causing the young one to jump and squeal.
It had to be a walker.
As she glanced to her side, she could see it laying on the ground. One of its hands moved slowly. But it’s grunts were quiet and soft, almost weak.
Taking a few steps forwards she saw the outline of an axe lodged into his throat with dried blood surrounding the wound.
“Someone must have tried to kill you a while ago.” She whispered to herself.
Gathering the courage to wander forwards more, Clementine did exactly that and stopped before the monster’s head. She didn’t get too close however, the moment her eyes grazed the face of the body her mind froze and she went silent.
It was Christa.
“No…” The raven-haired girl whispered in disbelief. “No.” Her voice drifted into a whimper, then a cry, then a sob as she continued to repeat the word over and over.
She had spent so much time looking and searching for her, but she never came. They never found her. And now she knew why.
The sound of cautious crunching leaves filled the area around her. Clementine’s head fell, and as soon as she felt her chin brush her chest she knew it was over.
A jump wracked her body as a hand was placed against her shoulder, jolting some of the tears off her face.
“Clem?” Luke whispered as he crouched down to get a good look at her face.
Clementine sniffled and remained silent, staring ahead at the body. “It’s Christa.”
Luke remembered the stories that Clem used to tell. She would explain how after Lee passed, Christa was the one who took care of her.
“Oh Clem,” Luke breathed watching as the creature writhed in pain.
Clementine watched silently, her hands balling into little fists. “I really am useless.”
Luke’s eyes caught the side of her head upon hearing the statement. “Clem, you’re not.”
“Christa’s dead. I could have stopped it.”
“You couldn’t have, Clem. There was nothing you could have done.”
The pair of golden eyes squeezed shut and glanced away. “I could’ve done something.”
After a peaceful silence, a voice broke through the young girls quiet sobs.
“Look away, sweet pea.” Her eyes lifted from the ground, glanced past Luke, and landed on a man that she had known for so long. Kenny, using the name that Lee always used to calm her. “Let’s go home, Clem.” He whispered, starting forwards towards the two.
Luke nodded. “You’re brave, kiddo. You helped Christa. Don’t forget that.”
“How?” She sniffled.
“You showed her compassion. You show everyone that. Because of that, you’re not useless.”
Luke’s words caused the girl’s heart to melt, as her eyes glanced past the male and landed on Kenny.
The male gave a tiny nod and smile, extending out of his hands for her to take. With a small determined nod as she wiped her tears, she walked forwards sliding her hand into his own. As Luke wandered to her side, she did the same to him.
Her two guardians. The two that proved she wasn’t useless after all. With tiny sniffles, she started to walk towards their cabin, squeezing their hands when she needed support.
“I’m ready to go home.”
