“Clem?” Sarah nervously asked, her voice bordering on terrified. Clementine sat silently, refusing to make a noise as her head was buried in her knees, her back against the wall of the ski lodge bedroom that her and Sarah shared.
“Please, wait.” Clementine pleaded desperately, her hands squeezing the side of her head desperately. “Oh gosh, why can’t I remember?!”
Before Clementine could take another breath, Sarah was out the door and Clementine was left alone to be eaten by the darkness.
For the past few days, Sarah had been asking Clementine to explain what her parents were like, and who Lee was since she had heard so much about him. Clementine had pushed it off for a few days, but after a while she finally agreed to sit down and tell her about it. But, she realized that she couldn’t remember.
“Luke!” Sarah squeaked, carefully walking down the stairs. She didn’t want to speak too loudly, after all she didn’t want Clementine to hear.
Hearing the soft voice call out to him, Luke glanced up and raised an eyebrow at her worry. “What’s up, Sarah?”
“It’s Clementine.”
Luke immediately stood, striding closer to the young girl. “Is she okay?”
“I don’t know. She’s seems really upset.”
“About what?” He pried, not hesitating a moment before asking his questions.
“She can’t remember her parents, or that Lee guy.”
Luke’s eyes widened as silence engulfed them. A moment later, he stood and placed a hand on Sarah’s shoulder. “Go find your Dad. She’s going to be fine, I’ll go see her.” He refused to look down at her and only stared at the bedroom door left only open a crack. “I’ll come and get you later.” He forced a weak smile before walking up the stairs towards Clem’s room.
Once he reached the oak door, he knocked quietly and creaked the door open, as if he was a little kid entering a haunted house for the first time. His eyes darted around the room before landing on the young girl curled up in the corner. A frown graced his lips as he walked closer and sat before her on her bed. “Clem,” His gruff voice spoke quietly, as if not to startle her. She shifted in her seat, acknowledging his existence but nothing more. “What’s going on? You ok?”
“I can’t remember them. I’m starting to forget them.”
Luke frowned, placing a hand on her shoulder. “Clem, look at me.”
Clementine’s golden eyes slowly emerged from her jeans, causing Luke to give her a small smile.
He removed himself from her bed and headed towards her backpack on the other end of the room. “Ah ha!” He whispered, pulling out the photograph of Lee that she had kept so close to her. He sauntered back over to her bed and held the photo out before her. “Remember this guy now?”
Clementine’s eyes watered as her fingers brushed against the tattered photo. “Lee…” She whispered, taking the picture from his hand and holding it in her own. “I remember now. All the things we went through…I miss him.”
Luke frowned and was about to speak when she continued. “He saved me from getting grabbed countless times. He helped fix my walkie talkie, he would hold my hand whenever I was scared…I miss him so much.”
Luke hated seeing the young girl in such a state, so he slid beside her and threw his arm over her shoulders. “It’s okay Clem. It’s okay to miss the people you love.”
Clementine nodded, sniffled as she ran her finger of the photograph. The memories of him saving her from her house, telling the stories about her parents, she remembered it all. She couldn’t believe what the world had come to. She would never be able to live a normal life, something would always try to hurt or kill her or the people she loved.
Without a moment of thought, her hand reached out and grabbed Luke’s free one. Luke gave her a warm smile and a curious look.
“I got scared.”
