“So, Clem.” Luke began, poking at the burning fire between the two with a stick.
The group was on their way through the woods on their 5 day trek. They had been walking for ages, and it seemed like they would need to walk for ages more. It was only their second night sleeping in the wilderness. Three more to go and they would reach their destination. Hopefully, of course.
“Yes?” Clementine asked, shifting her eyes from the beautiful flames bursting into the air towards her fellow cabin-mate.
The other members of the group were also surrounding, but they seemed too caught up in their own lives to notice the conversation that was taking place. Alvin and Rebecca were speaking to each other, Carlos and Sarah were going over safety measures for the night, and Nick sat beside Luke, twirling a twig in his hands as he ripped off any uneven pieces of bark.
“I’m sure everyone else is as curious as I am…but what exactly happened to you?” The question seemed to grab the attention of the adults, but Sarah didn’t seem to understand the question being asked.
“What do you mean?” Clementine asked. Not for the sake of not understanding, but rather for the sake of clarification and a tiny sliver of hope that when he did clarify, it wasn’t what she was thinking he wanted to know.
“How have you, you know, made it this far?” There was a brief pause. “Who did you stay with before us? Where did you go? How did you get here?” Luke knew about Lee, but that was it really. He didn’t know about anyone else, or anything else that happened to her prior to their encounter.
Clementine frowned. It was exactly what she was thinking he wanted to know.
“Well, it’s a pretty long story…” She started, hoping that the statement would end his curiosity.
Unfortunately for her, it did not.
“Actually, I’m rather curious too.” Carlos added, fixing Sarah’s hair as he spoke, ridding her raven hair of twigs and leaves.
“How did a little girl like you get so far?” Alvin added, turning to Rebecca and placing a hand over her swollen stomach.
Clementine took a deep breath and began. “It started off back at home. My parents left to be on vacation and left me at home with a babysitter. After she started acting…odd, I left and stayed in my treehouse for a day and a half. That was…until Lee found me.”
Just remember the moment they met brought a smile on her face.
“Lee, took really good care of me. He was just a stranger, but he was really sweet. He took me to a farm where we met some other survivors. From there on we met a whole bunch of people who had survived, all trying to figure out how to live. Together.”
Her smile was quickly replaced by a frown. “It didn’t always work.”
After taking a deep breath, she continued. “At first we went to Macon. Then we started towards Georgia. It was always what other people in our group wanted to keep us safe. What Lee wanted to keep me safe.”
She sniffled quietly, and after rubbing her nose she spoke again. “But problems started to occur. Members of our group turned against each other, we had a bite victim, someone shot them self in the head, bandits came and made deals with one of my friends…”
Her eyes closed, trying to regain herself as all the horrid memories came flooding back into her mind. All the people, all the memories, were so painful to re-live. It physically hurt to think about them.
“Eventually we made it to Georgia. And Lee was going to help me find my parents. But….a man found me. And kidnapped me. And while Lee was trying to find me…”
She stopped, she could feel water forcing itself against her eyes. She could feel her vocal cords wavering. But she needed to say it. They deserved to know her story. “He got bit.”
After taking a deep breath and rubbing her eyes, she resumed. “Eventually he found me, and he got me away from the man. But on our way back to finding the rest of our group, was went the infection began to kill him.”
The memory, was too painful to relive. This was the part that always killed her to the most. Her voice was much higher pitcher now, straining to hold back her cries. “We went into this jewelry store and he made me lock him to the radiator so he didn’t attack me.”
Tears fell down her cheeks, finally giving up the struggle to keep them in as she finished her story. “I shot him. So he wouldn’t come back.”
She could feel the shocked glances from everyone in the group, they had no idea what she had to go through to get here. “After that I found the remaining members of my group, and we left. We just left him behind. I had to leave Lee.”
Tiny sobs escaped with every word break. “That is my story.”
The group remained in quiet awe as she finished, sniffles and sobs escaping her lips breaking the silence of night.
“But how did—”
“Stop.” Luke grumbled, holding up his hand. “No questions.” He stood, making his way around the fire carefully towards the girl.
“Why can’t we—”
“Enough!” He scolded. Stopping in front of her and looking over his shoulder to silence Rebecca. “This is it. No more questions, no more answers. She’s done talking.” His face softened as he kneeled in front of her, a frown coating his lips. “She’s told us all that we need to know.” His voice was soft and gentle, hoping to calm her in any way he could.
His hands extended to his sides, outstretched ready to comfort the broken girl. And with a moments hesitation, Clementine sunk into his opens arms and clung to the adult like a life line. All her emotions, all of the memories, came back in loud, painful sobs.
“It’s okay, Clem.”
Luke shifted himself so he was sitting on her log, hugging the little girl close. The other members of he group nervously went back to their own tasks, not wanting to disrupt their moment of comfort.
As he stroked the back of her head an rubbed small circles on her back, his eyes drifted up to the sky, and he knew that her old group was watching over them.
Especially Lee.
“You’re a brave little girl you know.” He whispered to her. “Lee, would be proud of you.”
“You think so?” She mumbled into the orange fabric as she sniffled sadly, feeing too secure in the embrace to let it go.
“I know so.”
