“Is this it, Clem?” Luke asked with a raised eyebrow, gesturing to a white, wooden-boarded house that stood in front of the group.
Clementine gave a tiny inhale, shocked at just how much it hadn’t changed. It was still the exact same. Her home. “Yeah. This is it.”
“Why are we here again?” Rebecca asked, holding her back in pain.
The group had been walking for a few days. After Carver had arrived at their small lodge, they abandoned the house and walked until they found a small van with an almost full-tank of gas. In order to escape some walkers, Luke took the wheel and drove as far away from the sight as possible, hoping to outrun Carver as well as the zombie at the same time. After driving for a few days, they ran out of gas and were forced to walk on foot. Seeing where they were however, Clementine realized that they were back to her hometown. She was back home. She requested that they make a quick stop before they hit the road again.
Without answering Rebecca’s question, Clementine pushed her front door open with a creak. Luke quickly grabbed her shoulders and pushed her behind him, grabbing his machete in case any walkers were roaming inside. Clementine peeked around his legs, studying her familiar living room. “It hasn’t changed…” She whispered, slowly sauntering inside of the room and glancing around. It was still torn up, and the message light on their answering machine still blinking, blissfully unaware of the chaos that surrounded it.
“Clem, are you going to be okay in here?” Luke asked, following her as Alvin helped his wife towards the old, stained couch.
“Yeah. I think so.” She mumbled softly. It was more of a statement to herself than as an answer to his question. She just needed some closure now knowing that her parents were gone. As soon as she felt ready, they could continue on their voyage.
As she wandered through their broken home, her eyes attached onto her mothers laptop which rested on a large oak desk to the far right of the backyard door. The light along the side of the computer blinked bright red, indicating that it was running low on of battery. “It’s still working.” Clementine whispered in awe, approaching the piece of software and opening the lid.
“Yeah, the power cords looked to have been cut just recently.” Carlos stated, ushering Sarah to walk directly in front of him. “I assume for other people to use as supplies.”
Clementine quickly typed in the password to enter and smiled seeing her desktop wallpaper was still their family portrait from a year before the outbreak.
A flashing icon on the dash caught her eye. A small blinking 2 was flashing in red next to a small envelope, indicating that she had mail. Raising an eyebrow, Clementine clicked on the icon and her eyes widened in interest as she read the contents inside.
“Clem, what cha looking at?” Luke asked, slipping one of her family’s portraits into his pocket and walking towards the young girl. It was a present for her once they were alone. He could give her something to remember her family by.
Clementine hesitated a moment before clicking on the attachment in the email, her golden eyes tearing slightly as she watched the video before her. “Lee.”
Luke’s eyes widened as he leaned down to get a better look at what she was watching. Considering that the outbreak had only just begun when Lee had found Clementine, their families security company had sent her mother an email including the security camera footage of Lee and asked if the behaviour was normal. It was an automated email, and it was automatically sent when it detected unusual activity.
“This is when you first met Lee…” He whispered in shock, causing Clementine to nod in awe.
Hearing all the commotion, Rebecca and Alvin slowly wandered closer, and Nick slinked in through the front door at last and wandered towards the huddle.
Clementine watched in pain as Lee smashed her babysitters head in with a hammer, and introduced himself to her younger self. Watching her hand slip into his own almost broke her, right then and there.
“So that’s your old caretaker.” Rebecca asked, concern lingering in her voice.
“Yeah. That’s him.” Clementine whispered, pausing the video before he could fully walk out of the screen.
Nick, who was standing at the back of the gathering, stumbled forwards in his half-drunken state and pointed towards the other flashing mail icon. “There’s another one you should probably take a look at.”
Flashing out of her small daze, Clementine closed the window and opened the other email gasping quietly as she read it’s contents.
She remembered how her mother carried around a small portable camera in her pockets when they went on vacation. When pressing the right button, it could record video and take pictures and would send them directly to her email. Clicking on the attachment however, Clementine realized that her mother had fallen on the button after she was bitten and it had started the recording from her pocket.
“Oh no…” Clementine whispered in shock. The recording had started in the giant herd of walkers that were roaming the streets in Savannah. Where Lee had roamed the streets to find her. Where she finally found her parents.
Where Lee had died.
After around 10 or so minutes of footage, her mother had wandered to the front of the jewelry store, and inside the front window, was Clementine and Lee.
“Oh god.” Luke whispered. “Clem, is this where…?”
“Wait.” Clementine begged, lifting her hand to silence him as her voice caved and cracked.
Carlos watched the scene intently, pushing Sarah behind her and urging her not to watch. “What are you two saying?”
Clementine gulped sadly, watching their lips carefully. Speaking over their lips, Clementine began to speak their words that she remembered so clearly; the words that echoed in the back of her mind everyday since then. “Keep that hair short.” She watched herself nod and spoke over her own words. “I will. I’ll cut it myself.”
With every passing word, Clementine could feel her strength breaking, her power cracking, her ability to keep watching fading. She knew what was happening next, so why was she still watching? Did she want to believe that it didn’t actually happen? Was she looking for a loophole?
“I’ll miss you.” She mouthed over Lee’s final words, feeling her voice on the edge of collapsing. After attempting to gather herself, she spoke again. “Me too.” She whispered, hardly audible over the wavering of her vocals.
As soon as she saw herself lift up the gun, her hands shaking, Clementine squeezed her eyes closed and quickly turned away from the screen, causing Luke to pull the young girl into his leg as he watched the rest of the footage.
As soon as the sound of the gunshot radiated out of the laptop speakers, Clementine’s voice snapped as loud, heart-wrenching sobs escaped her lips.
“Holy shit.” Nick whispered, the only one finding enough courage to speak over the young girls loud sobs. The footage continued to reveal Clementine fall to her knees sobbing violently on the jewelry store floor.
Feeling his heart physically ache, Luke slammed the laptop shut. “That’s enough.” He stated angrily, frustrated at how the world could treat a young girl so poorly. “Clem,” Luke whispered, kneeling so he could cradle the girl in his arms. “I’m so sorry.”
Holding the back of her head in one of his hands, he nudged her face deeper into his shoulder, allowing her to muffle her sobs with his shirt.
The rest of the group dispersed as Luke waved his hand angrily to give the girl room. She needed time to breath, to calm down. And he didn’t want a crowd watching as she did so.
Clementine rubbed her eyes against Luke’s dirty orange shirt, sniffling sadly as the memory replayed in her head, and the sound of that final gunshot echoing through her ears.
Feeling her body shake and whimper, Luke rocked her back and forth. “It’s okay Clem, I won’t let anything like that happen again. You’re okay.”
After what felt like an eternity of rocking and soothing, Clementine rubbed her eyes and took a calming breath. She felt rather safe in their group, noting at how determined Luke was to keep her safe and happy.
Luke’s hugs, his relaxing words, they all reminded her of Lee.
Feeing warmth in her heart from the familiar hug, she spoke. “I’m glad I have you.” She claimed quietly.
The same words her and Lee had shared so long ago.
