He adored her.

He wouldn't go as far as saying that he loved her, the thought almost scared him, but he adored her. He adored everything about her.

Her laugh, the way she used to fiddle with pigtails when she was lost in thought before Javi cut her hair, her determination, he even sometimes loved her stubbornness. He loved the way she poked at his shoulder when he made her laugh, and her smile. Her smile made his world spin, but he loved it most when it was directed at him.

But he had a problem, and his adoration of her existence wouldn't fix it. The desire to hold her hand or kiss her cheek only ever made his situation far, far worse.

He couldn't talk to her.

He was a wreck whenever she was nearby. He came off as normal — as normal as an awkward, socially anxious, teenager could be — but he could never truly say what he meant.

"Hey Gabe, can you pass me that screwdriver?"

"Heh, yeah, I'll drive it right to you."

The look she had given him, the raised eyebrow and the smirk that screamed 'are you serious', made him want to throw himself into a grave.

Then, she had giggled. "That's the worst pun I think I've ever heard, dork."

That fixed it. If anyone else called him a dork it would rattle his bones and would garner a cold glare and a crossed-armed eye-roll. With Clementine, he could only grin. She was the only one allowed to call him that. She was the only one that could make him smile like that.

That was why it drove him crazy that he couldn't formulate his thoughts whenever she was around.

Pacing the park grounds, with his hands stuffed in pockets and kicking the dirt beneath his feet, he attempted to formulate a plan. The next time he saw her, what would he say? Should he ever confess his feelings? Or, alternatively, should he just joke around and wait to see if she makes the first move? Should he prepare possible conversations for when he runs into her?

"Gabe?" Javier, mid-step in the opposite direction, froze in place before backtracking to properly see the boy. His brows touched, studying the teen briefly before setting aside the toolbox and plywood he was hauling. "You doing okay?"

At first, the male said nothing, watching as he set aside his task at hand and turned his attention entirely to him. Gabe's expression fell, removing his gaze from where it had momentarily met his. "Yeah, just thinking."

Javi's brows furthered inwards, his hands settled against his hips as he gave a casual glance past his nephew's shoulder, surveying Richmond's park for sights of anyone nearby. "Thinking about what?" He posed, content at the lack of people.

Gabe's brows tensed, the thought of what to say crashing and tumbling behind his temple. He sighed, eyes closed and ripping his head upwards to meet his uncle's concerned stare. "Javi, how did you start talking to Kate?" He internally flinched at how ridiculous the question sounded. "I mean, how did you," he hesitated, scrambling to save himself from sounding like an idiot. "Get to know her better?"

He lost.

Javi gave a small smile, one of coy understanding, before giving a soft chuckle. Instantly, Gabe knew he was busted. "What's this actually about, Gabe?"
