Clementine panted madly as she closed the door to the small cabin her group was taking shelter in. Over the past few years, their group had been on the move to try and avoid groups and camps like Carver’s.
Clementine wiped her wet brow, and stood tall as she adjusted her backpack over her shoulder. “I got some.” She called out into the house, tossing her bag onto the small couch that Nick was sleeping on. It gently bumped his leg, causing him to groan and shift around but not wake.
After a few moments of silence, a few stomps were heard from the ceiling above her, and Luke emerged from upstairs. “Sarah’s not hungry.” Luke stated, stuffing his hands into his pockets nervously. Luke studied the teen before him and placed his hands on her shoulders. “You okay, kid?”
Clementine rolled her eyes playfully and jolted out of his grasp. “Yes, I’m fine.” She said, grabbing her bag off of Nick and setting it down on the kitchen counter. “I got a whole bag full of food.”
Luke ruffled her hat and smiled at her. “You’re a lifesaver. I don’t think we had enough food to make it through the week.” Luke took a handful of energy bars and started back up the stairs. “I’ll give these to Sarah and be right back.” He called over his shoulder.
Clementine gave one, solid laugh before going through her bag once again. Luke still always had to tell her where he was going and where he would be if he needed her. He worried a little too about about where she was and when she would get home. He had good reason to, the world now wasn’t one that someone should have to face alone, but he constantly treated her as if she was still the 11-year-old he met so long ago.
Grabbing a granola bar, Clementine tossed it towards Nick and it landed smack on his nose.
He grunted, and jumped to a sitting position. “Owch,” he growled as he rubbed his nose in pain. “Watch where you throw things.”
“That’s food I just gave you.” She replied, not removing her eyes from her bag.
“Did you have to throw it at me?” He asked with a half-frown half-smirk grazing his lips.
“There was no other way to get you up.”
“I doubt you tried any other way.” He commented, pushing himself towards the teen. But before he could get close enough, another body pushed between them.
“Woah woah. Down boy.” Luke teased, smirking at his friend. Nick sighed, stuffing his hands into his pockets. Luke never ever let him tease Clementine, it was his number 1 rule. “Give the kid a break Nick, she got us a lot of food.” As Luke spoke, he placed the energy bars back on the counter causing Clem to frown. Sarah apparently wasn’t hungry, but she hadn’t been eating for so long now. A sinking feeling fell over her, along with a mix of irritation. “I’m not a kid, Luke.” Clementine commented, her frustration about Sarah now being taken out on Luke.
Luke frowned slightly and gave Nick a small push back to the couch. Once he was out of earshot, Luke leaned against the counter and examined her expression-less face. “You okay, Clem?”
Clementine sighed. “I’m just worried about Sarah.” She replied plainly.
Feeling pity for the girl, Luke placed a hand on the girl’s shoulder. “Clem, she’s gunna be okay. She’s just upset about her Dad that’s all.”
Clementine sighed, pushing her bag against the wall. “I know…” She whispered, staring down at the counter her hands were resting on.
Luke wrapped his arm around her in comfort and slowly melted into a warm hug. “It’s gunna be okay, kid.”
Clementine’s eyes closed slightly, Luke’s hand rubbing her back soothingly was causing the days events to catch up with her. “Kid?” She asked softly, irritation now vanished from her voice, and all that was left was a bit of exhaustion.
“To me you’ll always be a kid, Clem.” He said quietly, pulling away and smiling at her. He placed a gently kiss against her forehead and rubbed her shoulders. “Go to bed. You’ve done enough for us today.”
Clem gave a tiny laugh and nodded, giving him and Nick a small wave before starting up the stairs.
As Luke turned to watch her, he could only see the little 11-year-old walking up the stairs with that blue rainbow jacket she was given. He could hardly tell that she was a 17-year-old now. He remembered when they first met, when she told him everything about her past. She was so strong as a little girl, and she was still just as strong now. She wasn’t a teenager to Luke, she was just a little girl in an adult body.
“You okay, Luke?” Nick asked, tossing his food wrapper into the garbage as he spoke to his friend from the couch.
Finally watching the girl disappear at the top of the stairs, he nodded. “I’m doing great, Nick. Just great.”
