The morning before their shift, Mallory Shepherd and Alex Karev decided to stop over to Meredith Grey and Derek Shepherd's house. When they arrived, Mallory went straight upstairs in search of Lexie Grey, eager to talk to her.
Biology determines much of the way we live.
From the moment we are born, we know how to breathe and eat...
As we grow older, new instincts kick in.
Meanwhile, Alex Karev sat with Carter in the kitchen. He had him in the spare highchair that they kept at Meredith's, feeding him baby food while he talked to Meredith about how their morning had gone.
We become territorial.
"It's been a weird morning," Alex admitted to his sister-in-law. "I don't even know how to describe it, really."
"Weird how?" Meredith questioned with furrowed brows. "Like weird with Carter or weird with—"
"The other option," Alex answered, not even letting her fully say her guess aloud as he continued to feed Carter. "I'm just happy that he's not going through any big stages. I don't think we can handle any more challenges."
"Really?" Meredith was quick to ask. "She's seemed fine whenever we've been at work—"
With a shrug of his shoulders, Alex made sure to add. "It's not that she's not fine. Nothing's wrong. It's just not right—"
"But what do you mean by that?" Meredith continued to push. "I need more details."
"There's still the fact that she's not cleared for surgery," Alex explained with a sigh. "And I know that it's bothering her. I'm just worried that the longer this goes on, the more uninterested she's gonna be in coming back."
"Oh—"
We learn to compete.
Just then, Mallory came back into the kitchen, going straight to the diaper bag. She rustled around in search of something as she spoke up. "I swear, my entire life is attached to this bag. How's Carter doing with his breakfast?"
"Well, you know how much he likes mushed carrots," Alex retorted as Carter spit it out once again. "Did we pack any of the banana baby food? He does better with that."
