During the next week, all of the residents were assigned to the dreaded night shift, where the attendings went home at the time they normally did, and the residents came in to watch their patients in their place.

Mallory Shepherd and Alex Karev decided to crash at Meredith Grey and Derek Shepherd's house for the night shift; that way they wouldn't be alone in attempting to get their son to sleep throughout the day.

We, doctors, take pride in the fact that we can basically sleep standing up...

Anytime, anywhere.

Since they were on the night shift, they spent the entire day sleeping in preparation. However, since Carter had become mobile with his crawling, they had to install a baby gate at the top of Meredith's stairs, and pray that he would stay in the bed with his parents.

Carter had other plans, though, since he was fully rested from a full night of sleep. He found ways to wake up his parents throughout the day as he crawled from room to room, since the only door that was shut was the bathroom.

"Where's Carter?" Mallory asked as she jolted awake in the bed, seeing that Carter wasn't on the floor. "Wasn't he just in here?"

"I think that was like an hour ago," Alex replied, not even sitting up. "He headed back in the direction of Lexie, I think."

"Well," Mallory groaned as she got out of the bed. "We'd better go find him."

"There's only so many places he could be," Alex insisted as he stood up next, throwing on a tank-top. "We put the baby gate at the top of the stairs, and we shut the bathroom door. He's good to explore."

But it's a false pride, because the truth is...

After about 20 hours without sleep...

You might as well just come to work drunk, doctor or not.

When they walked out of April's bedroom that she had insisted they stay in, Derek Shepherd was standing by the baby gate with his nephew in his arms. He looked over to his sister and his brother-in-law as he let out a laugh.

"Look, Carter," Derek got his nephew to laugh with him as he pointed out. "Your parents have matching black eyes."

"You're not funny," Mallory retorted as she took Carter from him. "How was your day, buddy? I swear, you barely took a nap."
