When Richard Webber walked into the residents' lounge, all of the residents were already standing at their lockers, prepared to start their day. The Chief couldn't help but smile as he looked at the class of soon-to-be attendings, most of whom he had watched since they were interns.

They train doctors slowly...

They watch us practice on frogs, and pigs, and dead people, and then live people.

They drill us relentlessly...

They raise us like children...

And eventually, they take a cold, hard boot, and they kick us out of the nest.

As Richard cleared his throat, all of the residents looked over to him, knowing that he was about to give them a speech of sorts. And as he did with all of his speeches, he started by stating his confidence in them.

"I have great faith in you. Great faith. I can because I chose you, I trained you," Richard started his speech with a smile. "I've watched you work. I know what you can do. That's why today is different."

All of the residents looked into their lockers, and that was when they noticed that their normal light blue scrubs had been replaced with the navy ones that the attendings wore. Everyone except for Louis Carmichael and Lexie Grey, who still had their normal scrubs.

Meredith was the first to pick up the scrubs, her brows furrowing. "Navy scrubs?"

"Attending scrubs," Richard clarified with a nod. "You are attendings for the day. You will run the cases, take point, but don't be a fool. If you get in over your head, cry for help. Until then, congratulations. You've been promoted."

"This is so cool," Mallory gasped as she held up the scrubs to Alex. "I'm so happy that I was cleared for this."

"Right?" Alex replied, looking just as excited. "This is a promotion I could get used to."

After Lexie searched a little more around her locker, she raised her hand to ask. "Um, Chief Webber. I'm sorry, but Louis and I didn't get any scrubs."

"Oh, this is for fourth-year residents only, Grey," Richard told her, which made Lexie look disappointed. "It's just a regular day for you and Carmichael."

"That's okay," Louis didn't look bothered. "We'll get our turn eventually."

"Well, fine," Lexie retorted with narrowed eyes. "If they're gonna be attendings, then that makes me Chief Resident."
