Hearing the knock at your front door, you stood up from the sofa and opened it.

It was a nice surprise when you felt the comfort of your girlfriend's arms around your neck as she excitedly hugged you tightly.

"Lisa! What are you doing here?" You asked as she pulled away from the hug.

She smiled to herself, her eyes lighting up as she looked at you from head to toe.

You were dressed in a pair of grey sweats and one of her sweaters that she let you have because of how much you love it. Your white socks looked so fluffy on your feet and your hair was pulled into a messy bun.

You were relaxed and the sight warmed her heart.

"I brought dinner." She grinned as she picked up the takeout bag by her feet, which she set down so she could hug you first thing.

"Oh. That's so nice." You chuckled, butterflies filling your chest. "I was just in the middle of some stuff for my classes. But you can come in and eat with me, as long as you let me focus for a few more minutes."

"Of course!"

You nodded for her to come inside and you closed the front door behind her.

"I got your favorite!"

"Awe, baby. Aren't you the most amazing girlfriend in the world?" You grinned as she put the food on the table before you pecked her lips lovingly.

She looked at the sofa and her brown eyes went wide upon seeing all of the papers and notes on it.

"Wow! That's a lot of stuff."

'Yeah, well, no one said university was easy." You sighed and sat down, pulling everything onto your lap so she could sit down next to you.

"Are you going to eat?"

"Yeah. Just one moment."

She nodded and patiently waited for you, watching as you read over a few things.

But one moment turned into a few and she tapped your hand, just checking on you.

"Are you okay?"

"Oh. Yeah." You said, forcing a smile as you put the cap on your pen and put everything on the table. "Sorry. Sometimes I zone out."

That's when she noticed them; the dark circles under your eyes.

You looked so tired. It wasn't hard to understand why when you've got so much going on at the moment.

She knows how that goes, even though her situation is different than yours.

But, nonetheless, she was concerned.

"Are you okay?" She asked again.

"Baby, I told you I'm fine."

"But I don't believe it." She said and watched you bite your lip.

"I'm just a little stressed out."

"I can understand why! Look at everything you have on your plate right now."

You sighed before burying your face in your hands.

"How are you sleeping?"

You looked at her and parted your lips to speak but she shook her head before you got the chance to.

"Honestly. Tell me the truth, y/n."

"Not well." You confessed. "I don't get more than a couple of hours a night."

"Y/N," She spoke softly, reaching out to comfort you by rubbing your arm. "You look exhausted."

"I'm fine."

"Babe. It's me you're talking to. You don't have to lie or put on a brave face. It's only me."

You felt the tears sting your eyes, suddenly overwhelmed with everything you've been keeping inside.

"I hate that there's so much I have to do. Sometimes I wonder why I'm on this path. I don't even think I want this anymore."

"University?"

You shrugged your shoulders wordlessly, confused about the path you truly want to take in life.

"Then take a little break to figure things out."

"I can't! My parents would be so upset."

"That's what this is about?" She wondered. "You put yourself through all of this stress and pressure for your parents?"

You stared at your lap, not feeling very proud of those choices.

"I put on this facade to be the perfect daughter, the perfect student. But I feel like falling apart sometimes.

"Oh, baby," she softly spoke.

"But I try to keep it all together. Because I don't want to let them down."

"What about you?" She asked, taking you by surprise. "What about letting yourself down?"

You looked away from her brown eyes once more.

"Y/N, life is too short to live to constantly please your parents."

"I'm just so used to it. It's easier said than done to not worry about those things."

Lisa heard the crack in your voice and instinctively pulled you closer.

"I just want them to be proud of me."

"They should be proud of the real you, y/n. Not the facade that you put on. That's not who you are and you shouldn't feel forced to be like that."

You sniffled as you looked back up at her.

She brought her hands to your cheeks and softly brushed her thumbs beneath your eyes to catch your tears as they fell.

"You have to do what's best for you. You have to follow your heart. If this is what you want, then don't do it. Take some time for yourself to discover the things you want in life. This is your life to live, y/n. Not your parents."

"And what if they don't accept or approve of my choices?"

"Then you do what feels right about that." She said. "To pull away or to let go isn't selfish or terrible when your mental health needs to come first. You've got to make yourself happy. Follow your heart."

"Okay." You sighed. "I think I'm going to take a break and see what I want to do. Fo myself."

"Good for you, darling." She said as she stared at you proudly. "No matter what you choose and no matter what happens with your parents, I've got you and I'll be here for you through everything."

You put your head on her shoulder and she wrapped you in her arms, holding you close as you let go of all the worries and stresses you've felt for as long as you can remember.

You knew this was what was best for you and that's what you needed to do. No matter what happens, you have to put yourself first.

You know that Lisa will always be by your side, through the good times and the hard ones too, and that's all you truly need.
