"Is everything okay? You're starting to worry me with how quiet you are. It's very unlike you, Lili." You teased your girlfriend as she sat on your sofa, staring down at her hands in sadness.

It's late in the evening and she texted you from out of nowhere, saying that she needed to come over and talk to you about something.

You didn't tell her but you felt as though something just wasn't right as soon as you got that message.

But you trust her and you're at the point in your relationship where you tell each other that you love each other a lot.

So, you tried not to jump to worst-case scenario. You did your best to think positively, although that was a lot easier said than done for you.

"Lisa? Please, look at me."

She let out a shaky breath before lifting her head a few seconds later.

You put your hand over hers and tried to intertwine your fingers but she just let out a sad sigh before pulling them away.

"Why can't I hold your hand? Did I do something?"

"No." She said. "It's not you. I just don't know how to tell you what I need to tell you."

"You can tell me whatever it is." You said and she bit her lip before nodding and releasing it from her teeth a few seconds later.

"I ran into my ex earlier." She said. "And we got to talking and... I realized I'm still in love with her."

Your heart dropped in your chest, tears stinging your eyes.

"And we're going to try and work things out."

"So what are you saying?" You sniffled.

"I'm saying that we need to break up."

You cried as soon as the words fell from her lips.

This is not at all what you expected from Lisa.

You thought she loved you.

You thought she was over her ex.

She said that their relationship sorta fizzled out, that the spark between them disappeared long before they called it quits.

And now, she wants to throw everything that you've got together away?

Just to return to the relationship she seemed so relieved to be out of?

"I thought you loved me..."

"I do." She spoke softly as she reached out to dry your tears.

"No, Lisa! Don't do that! Don't touch me."

She swallowed thickly.

"I'm sorry. This isn't easy for me, y/n." She said. "I care about you, I truly do. I always will, but-"

"Just not as much as you do for her... right?"

She slowly nodded and you sniffled.

"I can't believe this..." You said.

"I know it's hard. It's hard for me too-"

"Well, let me make it a little easier for you." You said as you got up and walked to your front door, opening it up. "Get out."

"Y/N, please don't do this. I'm sorry, but I just want to be with her right now. I want to see if we can fix things. But... I want us to be friends, at least."

"Friends? After this? No, I can't do that, Lisa. Because I love you too much."

She stood up and slowly walked to you with a slow and sad sigh falling from her lips.

"Just remember what you told me - your relationship was basically over before you even ended things. If it doesn't work out again, don't come crawling back to me. I hope you're happy with her."

Lisa hung her head as she slowly walked out the door. She turned around to speak to you but you slammed and locked the door before she got the chance.

You slid down against it, crying hard as you realized you just lost the girl that you genuinely loved so very much, because she wanted someone else, and that was crushing.
