Kiera rubbed her growing belly as she roamed around the house that morning, a toothbrush prodding from between her lips as she was desperate to multitask before beginning to run late for her new job.
It was a simple job - something to keep busy as well as earn extra income. Four weeks after she had returned home, she had picked up a job as an office clerk at the city's courthouse - the same courthouse her mother had worked formerly before her early retirement. "Kimber, stop." She giggled, looking down at the three-month-old Corgi puppy she had gotten from one of her mother's friends: a Corgi and Australian Shepherd mix with the brightest blue eyes and blue merle coat. Kimber originally wasn't considered an option as Kiera wanted to solely focus on her pregnancy for as long as Simon was deployed, but the option was brought up once her mother mentioned getting a puppy to not only keep Kiera company, but to get early practice in nurturing another life to prepare for the lives she was creating.
Kimber wasn't the only pet, though.
She ended up getting a grey cat named Church, the name spawning from one of her favorite horror movies: Pet Semetary.
Although she preferred dogs as a pet, Church made his way to her favorite as he was typically "cuddlier" than Kimber was. "I'll be back this afternoon, babies." She smiled down at Kimber, who was learning to sit and wait patiently at Kiera's feet when she went into the kitchen - begging for a treat she knew she was going to get. Church did the same, except he was more vocal about it. "Okay, fine. Here's your treats. Kimber, you'll get yours when you go to your crate."
The Corgi's stubbed tail wagged, the puppy turning into a circle before her small legs carried her to the crate that was in the living room and waiting patiently for Kiera to reward her before shutting the door.
Although she had plenty to keep her occupied, she was lonely. Simon was what kept her at peace with the troubles she was facing. The last she had heard from him was nearly a week prior. The conversation was short as within a few minutes, gunshots rang out in the background before Simon quickly hung up after a quick "I love you!" and promises to call back when he could.
But somehow, Kiera didn't want to assume that he would.
She had been mourning a potential loss, nearly crying herself to sleep every night at his scent that still lingered on the pillow, feeling the babies beginning to kick - a reminder that they wouldn't exist without him, and even a subtle reminder of his toothbrush that was on the bathroom counter and his favorite tea bags that sat next to the coffee maker.
"Good morning, sweetheart," Eva smiled at her daughter after she entered the lodge - a new routine of having coffee with her daughter before her shift. "You're glowing this morning."
"I don't feel like it." She sighed, frowning.
"What's wrong?"
"I still haven't heard from Simon. Not since, you know."
