4- time to say goodbye

hiccups p.o.v

"bud... wake up" i stroke his cheek as he comes to.

"there you go" i stand up and hop back a few steps as he wobbles to his feet. the light fury stands a few feet away, watching toothless with affectionate eyes. i stand next to south who holds onto me to keep me upright, since the lower half of my left leg has gone with grimmel to the bottom of the ocean. 

toothless mewls at me as the light fury rubs herself against him lovingly, tears come to my eyes and i know what i have to do. i smile at south who nods at me, and i hop over to him. the light fury backs away.

"bud. you have something here that i could never give you. i think its time to say goodbye." tears run down my face as toothless mewls at me again.

"go with her. you will be safe. safer than you could ever be with me. for 6 years i thought about what i wanted, but i ignored what you wanted. now, you want to go be with her, so its time to go now. be happy, buddy. take the others to the hidden world, and be safe, okay" i sob lightly and press my face against his. i hear crying behind me, but i dont turn to comfort whoever it is.

"its time for you to be free."

there are tears on toothless' face, something i have never seen before. he croons out to me, and i can see the pleading look in his eyes. he also looks at me with affection. 

"you were never just a pet. you are my best friend, my brother. and now, i have to release you" he licks my cheek

"yeah, i love you too, bud. go." i place my palm to his snout. one. more. time.

"go..." i repeat and move back, south catches me. i look at her and see the tears on her face. i look back at the others who are all taking the saddles off their dragons and saying goodbye, too. 

"you're doing the right thing" south sobs.

"i know." i say, my voice thick with emotion. 

the light fury mewls at toothless who motions his head towards the sea, and she takes off, the other dragons following. toothless stays and watches me

"go..." i mouth and he takes one last look at me before flying after the others. i collapse and sob into my hands, with south doing the same.

"be free!" south calls after them. one last collective roar before silence falls over everyone.

"lets go home"

nine years later

some say that dragons never existed. that they were just a folk tale told to scare kids. but us berkians know the truth.

"south! grab me the spare rope please?" i turn and shout at my wife

"sure, here!" she tosses it to me and i use it to tie the sails back.

"okay, zephyr, c'mere" i hold my arms out to my 7 year old daughter. she gladly comes to me. 

"nuffink stop climbing the mast! your father got struck by lightning doing that" south warns and i laugh

"dad, is that true?" zephyr looks at me with her big blue eyes

"yeah it is. i was only a couple years older than you" i laugh. 

"wow. did it hurt?" nuffink asks

"it did. alot. so dont ever do it" i shook my finger jokingly at them

"im sure they get the point, hiccup" south chuckles and kisses my cheek, then the kids. i hear a noise from up ahead

"south, lower the anchor, i hear something" she does as i say. the fog clears a little and i see a black shape look at us. is that... oh my thor...

"south..." i whisper

"take the kids to the other end of the boat, he might not recognize me" i ask her, she quickly does as much, sheilding them from being able to see. toothless jumps onto the boat and slowly creeps towards me

"h-hey bud. remember me?" i hold my hand out. i hear a faint 'its okay' from behind me

toothless sniffs me then his pupils grow wide and he jumps on me. i grunt and yelp as he crushes me

"hey bud! hows the tail holding up? bet it could use a little oil and some fine tuning" i hug him as he licks me. when he calms down, i hold my hand out to zephyr and nuffink

"come here" they slowly walk to me

"hold your hand out, like this" i gently take their hands and arrange their hands correctly. toothless presses his snout into their palms and they grin in awe

south comes up to me.

"my favourite things in one sight. can things get better?" i ask as i stare at the kids playing with toothless, the light fury and the three hatchlings. she hits me

"hey! what about me" she fakes offense and i laugh

"eh you're alright" she hets me again and we both laugh. 

"toothless! wanna go for a flight?" i say exitedly. he yips in agreement

"nice" i swing myself on to him, then hold my hands out to help south and the kids. 

"hold on everyone" nuffink is sat in my lap, while zephyr is in south, with outh holding on the me. toothless takes to the air, and takes us a few miles out, where we find makeshift, souths monstrous nightmare, sat on a rock, seemingly awaiting our arrival

"makeshift! hey girl!" south coos as they greet each other.

"take zephyr on makeshift" i smile at her and help her get off toothless, then south helps her onto makeshift.

"ready?" we yell as they take to the sky. 

some say that when the earth shakes or volcanoes erupt, its the dragons. telling us that they are still here, waiting for the day we can find a way to be at peace with them. but until then, we will guard the secret, for we know the truth. 

and the truth is, the dragons are still here.
