hiccup's p.o.v
i absently watch the snow falling through the window of the ED. with a sigh, i pull out my personal phone and thumb up south's number. the dial tone rings straight away. i feel a hand on my shoulder, turning around and seeing dr hofferson.
"you okay?" she asks. i shrug.
"can't get hold of my wife. she said she was going to her moms, but in this storm..."
"i'm sure she's okay. her phone probably died, or she can't get service in the storm. try again in a few minutes" then, i get a notification on my work phone, groaning when i see a warning that there was a blizzard pile up on the highway.
"incoming! look alive, guys!" maggie yells, as the ed becomes chaotic. it's been an hour since the first trauma came in, and i haven't been called yet so i'm dipping in and out of the rooms, helping out.
"dr haddock! you're on this one!" i begin walking up
"what have we got?"
"21 year old female, eight months pregnant, multiple lacerations, possble broken arm, couldn't get id, intibated in the field." i approach the gurney, and let out a cry of shock.
"dr haddock?" the attending asks.
"this is my wife, south haddock. fucking hell" i run my hand through my hair.
"okay, dr haddock, will you be able to do this?"
"yeah, yeah, c'mon, let's get her in" i shake my head. right now, south is my patient. not my wife.
"on my count. one, two, three" we shift her onto the bed.
"hand me an iv" i say. the nurse gives me one, so i insert it.
"5 of morphine" the nurse nods and injects the morphine into her iv. i go up next to her and tap her cheek.
"south, south, can you hear me?" i hover over her. her eyes flicker.
"h-hiccup?"
"yes. where are you feeling pain?"
"m-my arm. is the baby okay?"
"i'm not sure yet. we're gonna take real good care of you, okay?" she nods a little.
"...wake me up when you're done" she murmurs, closing her eyes again. i gingerly feel around her neck, looking for swelling. i find none.
"okay, get me the ultrasound?" i ask the nurse, who nods and walks out the room.
"ah, i'm not comfortable with using an x ray while she's this pregnant. we'll have to splint it for now, and decide the best course of action once she's stable" i inform the attending, who nods.
"yes doctor" then, the nurse wheels in the ultrasound. i pull her shirt up, and rub the gel on her swollen belly. then, i use the probe to check the baby, peering at the screen.
"okay, baby is stable. let's splint that arm." the nurse takes the machine away, and i splint south's arm. once that's done, most of the other doctors leave, and i go about stitching her up. the cuts aren't so bad, so it doesn't take me long. south wakes up.
"...the baby?" i smile at her, and tuck some of her hair behind her ear.
"baby is just fine. a little jolted, but fine. so, your arms broken, and you have quite a few small cuts, but you'll be okay. gods, you scared the living daylights out of me" i chuckle. she looks sheepish as she stares at me, the c collar preventing her from moving.
