43- i will protect you

hiccup's p.o.v

"useless runt" south sneers, shoving me to the ground. i let out a yelp as i hit the floor hard. her foot presses down on my chest. snotlout kicks my side, making me grunt and gasp in pain.

"nobody loves you. you will never be our chief. you're nothing but a weak, scrawny, useless runt" she mocks me, and yet i still look up at her, my crush on her pounding through my chest. i don't understand it at all. she wants nothing more than to see me die, yet i love her anyway. she finally steps back and turns to snotlout, a look in her eyes i don't understand.

"let's go babe" he tells her, wrapping his arm around her waist. jealousy courses through me as i watch them walk off together. i sigh and lift myself up, already feeling the bruise on my chest forming. i walk back to my house, softly closing the door behind me. my dad only glances up at me, before going back to cooking food. as i go up to my room, i think about south. she used to be such a nice girl, we were best friends. i'll never understand why she turned on me, but i suppose i can't blame her. i mean, who would want to be seen with me? the useless heir to the hooligan tribe. i'm laying in my bed when i hear a knock at the door. toothless is asleep, and my dad is out doing chief stuff so i head downstairs. i open the door to see south standing there. i quickly try to close the door but she grabs it.

"hiccup, please!" her voice is desperate. i furrow my eyebrows and slowly open it wide enough to get a good look at her. there is a big red and purple mark on her cheek, her eyes are streaming tears and she's shaking. my heart breaks for her, so i open the door.

"what do you want, south? here to pick on me some more?" i can't keep the venom out of my voice. she flinches

"i... i deserve that. hiccup, i'm here to explain everything. and then... you'll never see me again" i cross my arms

"okay. let's hear it." is all i say, leaning against the wall. she looks down and fumbles with her hands.

"about 6 years ago, when we were friends, snotlout discovered something about me that he used against me. i'll twll you what in a small while. he came to me. i still remember exactly what he said. 'if you don't help me bully hiccup to the point of insanity so he gets booted out of being the heir so i can take over, i will kill him and then north. don't test me'. so i complied. he gave me the same threat when he found out i was planning on telling the chief everything. i have hated myself for years for what i did to you. all because he found out i was in love with you." she says. i gasp at the last part.

"wh-" she puts her hand up.

"he confronted me after we left, asking if i was still in love with you. i tried to deny it, but i was always a bad liar, so he saw straight through me. he gave me this" she points to her bruised cheek "and said that i had better stop loving you and start loving him because he's already started getting his dad to get a marriage contract for us from mine. i couldn't go without explaining everything to you. it wouldn't be fair. i'm not asking for you to forgive me, i just want you to understand that i did everything i could to protect you. goodbye, hiccup. i hope you'll forgive me one day." she says before turning and sprinting away, giving me no time to react. i let out a shaky breath and put my head in my hands. she... loves me. i have to go after her! i run up the stairs and shake toothless awake. he huffs and cracks open an eye, before perking up at my alarmed state.

"toothless, c'mon" he stands up and i hop onto his back. we fly out of the window. as toothless flies around the island, i look for her. after about 10 minutes, i spot someone standing on the cliff, looking out. it's her!

"down there, bud!" i guide him. suddenly, she steps forward and plunges off the cliff.

"NO!" i yell, urging toothless to go faster. i close in on her as she approaches the waves. i catch her just before she hits them.

"hiccup? why?" she asks, confused and scared. i say nothing as we fly back to my house. after we land, i sit her down on my bed.

"hiccup..." she whispers. i shake my head.

"south why? why would you do that?" i ask her. she looks away.

"because there is no other way. i've hit a dead end. you hate me, snotlout forces me to do things, my dad hits me. i just want it all to go away" she whispers.

"this isn't the answer. pain is temporary, but death isn't."

"my pain is not temporary, hiccup. i think you of all people know that" she scoffs.

"that's not true! i mean, you could have asked for my help" i yell, waving my arms in front of me

"yeah, like you would have helped the girl who bullied you" she says miserably.

"of course i would, cos' i love you!" i shout, not realising what i said until after i said it. her head snaps up.

"y-you..." she whispers. i sigh and sit next to her.

"yeah, i love you too. i loved you the whole time, but i thought you hated me, so i never said anything. you don't have to kill yourself" i say, taking her wrists in my hands. she winces and pulls back, stopping me short. i take hold of her arm and pull her sleeve up, revealing many, many scars and fresh cuts going up and down her arm. i gasp.

"south... no..." i grab her and pull her onto my lap, burying my head in her neck. she sobs into my chest, and i hold her tight.

"i'm so sorry" she whispers through her cries. i just run my hand through her hair, soothing her. eventually, she looks up at me. before i can react, so grabs my face and pulls me down against her, placing her lips on mine. i stiffen for a second, before kissing her back. she shifts so she's straddling me, her hands in my hair. i grip her waist, kissing her hard. after a minute, she pulls back slightly, resting her forehead on mine.

"please don't leave me" she whispers weakly.

"of course not. i will protect you. always."
