CHAPTER II: BROKEN BONES

Hiccup's p.o.v

it's Sunday, probably around 6 am. blythe is fast asleep against my chest as I lay there with a slight smile, waiting for the inevitable sound of pattering footsteps that announce the arrival of bliss and koda for the usual Sunday morning cuddle. this Is always the part of the week I look forward to most, the chance to spend a quiet few hours with my family. as always, I am not disappointed as the sounds of gentle footsteps and the slow creak of the door opening sounds. I open my eyes and look a them, peering in through the door. I say nothing, holding out my arm to them. i climb up onto the end of our bed. bliss clambers on top of me, while koda squeezes between us. I shuffle back a little, moving onto my back so bliss is laying on my stomach. blythe cracks open an eye and smiles. I slide my arm around both koda and blythe, so we're all really close together. bliss has her head laying on my chest, her hair lightly tickling my chin. I lean down a little and kiss her forehead. she kisses my jaw before snuggling against me again. the room is silent apart from the quiet music that blythe plays to fall asleep to. blythe has ADHD, so in order for her to fall asleep, she needs to be able to focus her attention on something. for her, it's music, or a quiet tv. right now, demons by imagine dragons is playing. I shift onto my side and bliss slides off me, laying between me and koda. she turns so that she's laying her hands around my bare arm. I slide that arm over the kids to stroke blythes face. she opens an eye again and smiles sleepily at me. she's gotten better after she got pneumonia 6 months ago. our foreheads press together with our kids between us. I feel waves of love running through me. all i can do is smile.

"i love you guys" she murmurs.

"we love you too momma" koda whispers back. none of us would ever admit it out loud, but koda is a total mommas boy, and bliss is a daddies girl. speaking of bliss, she wraps her arms around my neck and brings me closer. I chuckle a little and move my left arm to wrap around her. we cuddle for multiple hours, until the kids start getting a little shifty. that always means they're hungry. I slowly pull my arms away before sitting up. bliss whines from the now lack of warmth.

"c'mon. if you can get downstairs in the next 30 seconds, i'll make you pancakes." i challenge them. they gasp and shoot out of the bed, running full tilt down the stairs. i shoot up in alarm when i hear a loud thud and a blood curdling scream. me and blythe run out of the room and see bliss laying at the bottom of the stairs with her eyes closed, koda screaming and shaking her.

"what happened?" i yell, running down the stairs.

"she fell. hit her head on the banister" koda sobs, standing back as me and blythe drop next to bliss. I check her pulse and breath a small sigh of relief when i feel it's steady and strong.

"blythe, call an ambulance" she nods and runs out of the room. i look down and gasp when i see that her leg is bent weirdly.

"damnit" curse and gently hold onto her cheeks to keep her neck stable. blythe comes back into the room

"blythe, her leg's fucked" koda doesn't point out my swearing like he usually does, being to upset and worried for his sister. blood trickles down her forehead. there's a knock on the door, and blythe runs over. the front door is visible from where we are. the paramedics run in with a gurney, and i instantly step back to let them do their thing. I bite my knuckle to keep the tears at bay.

"can you tell me what happened?" the woman says. i recognize her as rowan from when blythe got sick.

"her and koda were running down the stairs because i told them that if they made it downstairs In 30 seconds, they'd get pancakes. she must have fell and hit her head on the banister. gods, this is all my fault" blythe comes next to me and wraps her arm around me, leaning against me.
