17- something new

south's p.o.v

today has been... a strange day. last night, there was a big storm and astrid almost got hit by lightning. the whole day she has been blind. i don't know what happened between her and hiccup, but something changed between them. after we all got back when astrid trained the triple stryke, hiccup kept glancing at her. when gothi came and healed astrid, she hugged him like only i ever did. 

"are you sure you're feeling okay?" i hear his voice from my place in the stables. i peer outside and see him sat next to astrid, their backs to me. i watch.

"i'm fine hiccup. you can stop worrying about me now."she turns her head and i can see her smile at him. he shrugs

"well, i never stop worrying about you. that's just the way it is"

"yeah, yeah, i guess... the same goes for me too." 

he moves closer to her, and i have a feeling i know what is going to happen. i don't interfere.

"can i ask you something" astrid breaks the moment of silence

"uh... sure"

"back in the forest when we wereum... you know" 

"yeah...?" 

"were you about to...?" she trails off, and hiccup gets flustered.

"oh so you felt that huh? heh, i could have got away with it" i feel my heart drop a little

"hiccup... you have a girlfriend"

"i know i just..." he trails off. they stay silent for a moment again

"why didn't you?"

"hm?"

"why didn't you?"

"well, i thought about it before, and i always thought that if it ever happened, it had to be perfect."

"well, this seems pretty perfect to me"

"yeah? yeah... i guess it does" they lean into each other and kiss. my heart drops and a tear drops from my eyes. after the kiss, he wraps his arm around her shoulders, and she wraps her arm around his waist. i leave out the back entrance of the stables before making my way to his hut. about a half hour later, he shows up, looking quite happy. he doesnt spot me as i'm leaning against the wall next to the door.

"hiccup." i say, getting his attention. he spins around and flashes me an obviously forced smile. 

"oh uh, hey south! what's up?" he looks a little nervous

"i saw you and astrid kiss." i smile lightly at him. his smile drops.

"oh thor, i'm sorry i just-" i hold my hand up, and he stops talking. i walk over to him and gently take both of his hands hin mine

"hiccup. i'm not mad at you. i don't hate you. we have been together for quite a long time, since before the dragons in fact. things change, people change. that's okay." he looks a little embarrased but smiles gently at me

"you always were the most understanding person i ever knew" i chuckle and wrap my arms around his shoulders. he hugs me back.

"i'm upset you didn't tell me you weren't happy, or you could have been with her sooner." i sigh and pull back, studying his face.

"yeah, i didn't want you to be sad. i'm sorry for not saying anything and leading you on" he frown at himself i chuckle and pat his cheek twice

"just promise me something."
