south's p.o.v

"you ready? i heard this new chief if a prick" hiccup says as he drives towards the firehouse. i chuckle

"i could do with some drama. the firehouse has been getting awful boring" he laughs as we pull in. i adjust my woollen hat on my head and pull my gloves tighter at the feeling of the cold air on my face. we walk into the staff door and clock in, before heading to the lounge. the chief is there. he looks at us and then the clock.

"you're late" he says in a stern voice. i raise my eyebrows.

"no, we're right on time" i point to the clock, which has only just hit 7, when our shift starts.

"if you're not 15 minutes early, you're 15 minutes late." i resist the urge to roll my eyes.

"you have our most sincere apologies" hiccup says. i choke on a laugh at his sarcastic tone.

"hmm, i should hope so. get to work" the chief leaves and we head over to everyone else.

"hey! nice to see you guys are back!" severide yells, standing up. he 'bro hugs' hiccup, then hugs me. we get lots of hugs and well wishes from the others.

"hows the little one?" dawson asks as she slides us over a slice of toast each.

"good as gold, he is." hiccup says proudly about his newborn son. me and hiccup were off duty for 3 months. one before he was born, two after. i take out my phone and show them a picture of our little one.

"awe! what's his name?" mouch asks. i grin.

"Arlo. Arlo Haddock" everyone awes at him. the chief walks in.

"why're you slacking? get back to work!" casey looks at him.

"sir, there is no work right now. we're just welcoming back our lieutenants from the leave they took."

"there is always work to do. i don't care where they've been, they're here now, so get on with it!" he stroms out.

"gods, what an asshole." then, the buzzer goes off, stating some structure fire.

"right, let's get back on the horse, hey babe?" i ask. he grins.

"right. let's go, guys!"

time skip.

as we hop out of the truck, me and hiccup get many pats on the back.

"ah, it's good to have you back on the squad!"

"and it's good to be back" the chief comes up to us, looking mad.

"haddock, grimborn, my office. now." i frown and follow him to his office, hiccup behind me. we stand in front of his desk.

"what you two did in that fire was reckless. you put the entire team at risk" he growls.

"sir, we did what our captain told us to do. we take orders from him." i say. he explodes.

"no! you take orders from me! i am your chief, not him. you answer to me. i am your superior" he yells.

"you are not superior to us. you are a human being, just as much as we are. all you are here for is to fill in for our real chief until he comes back. until then, we will have to find a way to all coexist peacefully, or we will have some real problems" i say, narrowing my eyes at him. hiccup places his hand on my knee.

"you will not talk to me like that! you hear me?" i stand up, as does hiccup.

"i hear you loud and clear. you have my most sincere apologies, oh high and mighty king" i do a fake little bow. hiccup glares.

"also, i don't appreciate you talking to my wife like that. you are not our leader. boden is. don't forget that" hiccup says, before taking my hand and leading me out. i take a big breath when we get back to the common room.

"you guys good?" severide asks.

"yeah, just put the fake cheif in his place. i have a feeling he may keep his mouth shut" hiccup smirks, sitting down and throwing his arm around my shoulders.

"so, wheres the little one?"

"my dads got him. can't afford a sitter, so my dad looks after him" hiccup says.

"i'm happy for you guys. that kid is a lucky one. he's got the best parents you could ask for" severide says, making us smile.

"thanks, kelly. you're a good friend" we all hang around the firehouse, cleaning and doing other stuff until it's time to punch out. i put my coat on, as well has my hat, scarf and gloves.

"did your dad say he was bringing Arlo here?" i ask. he nods.

"yeah, he texted me. he's outside"

"great" we head out, seeing stoick stood there, holding Arlo in one hand.

"stoick!" i yell, jogging up and hugging him.

"hey lass. hey lad. little ones missed his parents." i laugh and take my son out of sticks arms.

chief's p.o.v

as my shift comes to an end, i pull on my coat and head out the door. down the drive, i see lieutenant haddock and lieutenant grimborn. they're stood with an older man, and grimborn is holding a young baby. haddock has his arm around them, and the older man has his hands on their shoulders. something in me clicks, and i tell myself i have to realise that these are real people too. seeing them, so happy and in love... it makes me see that they are human beings too, not just beings that never listen to a word i say. these two have a fire in them, a fire that i can no longer bring my self to extinguish, no matter how much of a firefighter i think i am, this fire must burn hot and bright. i can't resist myself from going over to them. haddock looks up and spots me. his face falls.

"look, we'll leave in a moment we just-" i put my hand up.

"no, haddock, you were right. i'm sorry. i should never have treated you like that. both of you. i realise now that i am not superior to you. just... i'm sorry"

"so're we. we shouldn't have gotten your dander up like that. it was wrong of us" grimborn says, shifting the baby onto her hip. she holds her hand out. i shake it, doing the same with haddock.

"thanks, chief." i nod.

"as you were. and... congratulations on the baby" they both smile.

"thank you."
