another modern au, because I suck at everything. minor context, south works in a hospital as a person who goes to peoples rooms and chats with them, not really like a psychiatrist, more like a friend.it's mostly cancer patients, she goes to make them feel normal. i hope you enjoy.

south's p.o.v

"south!" i hear the call of the hospital's psychiatrist, dr mulligan. I turn around to face the middle aged man with a smile. we work closely together, so i'm very familiar with the smiling man.

"theres a man in room 5. he lost his wife in a car collision. she gave birth at the scene and died straight afterwards. he lost his leg as well" my heart breaks for the poor man.

"oh my... i'll go chat with him if he wants to talk thanks dr mulligan"

"see you soon" he pats my shoulder twice and walks away. i make my way to room 5 and peer in, seeing a man what looks to be his early twenties, with tousled auburn hair. he's staring down at a swaddled bundle in his arms, that i can only assume is his baby. I gently tap on the door and he look up. he has bright green eyes and fair skin covered in freckles. we make eye contact and I give him my friendly smile

"hey there! mind if pop in for a chat?" I say with a relatively cheerful tone. he gestures to the seat next to him and I walk over, sitting down

"what's your name?" i ask him, liking my fingers in my lap.

"hiccup. hiccup haddock" he says. his voice is quiet and a bit nasally.

"i'm south grimborn. nice to meet you! what's the little ones name?" I ask him. he glances down at her before looking back at me

"i... don't know yet. she was born 4 days ago, but i only woke up today, so..." he trails off, looking sadly to the baby. I drop the subject, knowing it makes him unhappy.

"what do you work as?" he gives a small, wan smile

"i'm a mechanic, but i also work on the police force, training dogs."

"that's really cool. do you enjoy it?"

"yeah. i'm good at it too, though i wouldn't usually say that. what about you? what do you work as?" I tilt my head

"I work in hospitals, going into peoples rooms to chat with them, make them feel human for a while. i'm also a voice actor for kids tv shows" he shows me a small smirk

"i assume that's why you're here then?"

"in a word, yes. I don't go to everyone, so don't be thinking you ain't special" i wag my finger at him, making him chuckle.

"sure, sure. i assume you know what happened, then?" he says the last part quietly. I hold my breath and nod sadly.

"yeah... I know you have probably heard this enough, but i'm sorry. i'm sure your wife was a lovely person, and she would have been a wonderful mother. I can already tell you will be an amazing father" I gently squeeze his arm, getting an appreciative smile in return.

"thank you... it's going to be hard without astrid. she was my rock" he says sadly.

"astrid? was that her name?" he nods.

"astrid can still be your rock. she may not be here with us physically, but she will always, always be here" I reach up and tap his chest. he breaks down into sobs, clutching his baby girl to him. I offer my silent comfort, gently placing my hand on his shoulder, squeezing it.

"i... I don't..." he can't say anything more through his tears

"its okay to cry. you have lost a lot, hiccup. just let it all out" my words make him cry harder. dr mulligan looks in through the window, probably hearing all he sobbing. I look him in the eye and nod, telling him I have it under control. he walks away.

"s-sorry" he says after a moment, wiping his eyes.

"that's quite all right. people always tend to cry around me" I pretend to tap my chin thoughtfully, making him smile.

"yeah, i can't imagine why" we both laugh.

"oops, I broke the rule" I make a face.

"what rule?"

"i'm not supposed to talk about why the patient is in, or anything related to it. i'm only supposed to talk about things like hobbies, interests, all that" I giggle a little

"well then, i guess we better get back on track" we begin talking about a bunch of random things, like what he like to eat, his favourite music, and all that. he starts to talk about where he would like to goin the future when he just suddenly stops, thinks for a second then smiles.

"Rosalie."

"huh?" i blink, confused. he glances at the baby then looks to me.

"i wanna name her Rosalie" I smile brightly.

"that's a beautiful name for a beautiful girl. your going to be batting boys away with a broom when she grows up" he groans

"oh thor, i hope not. no boys for her. ever" i internally swoon at the sight of him looking protectively down at her.

"c-can i hold her?" I ask, not wanting to offend him.

"of course. c'mere" he shuffles over. I sit on the edge of the bed and he holds the child out to me. I gingerly take her in my arms.

"aww..." she grabs my finger and gives a little coo, sucking on it with a closed eye smile.

"she likes you" he says fondly. I grin

"that makes a change. babies usually scream the moment they see my face." he studies me for a moment before shaking his head.

"i don't see why. don't take this the wrong way, but you are a beautiful person" I blush fiercely and smile at him.

"thank you." I look down at the child in my arms and almost gasp when i see she's fallen asleep, clutching my finger.

"aww she fell asleep. that's so cute" i gush quietly.

"well, I should let her sleep and leave you be for a while. you're a really cool guy. i might even come back" i lightly tease him, and he smiles.

"i might hold you to that" I hand Rosalie back to him. i just get to the door.

"south!" he says quickly. I turn around to see him blushing a little

"do you um... do you think I could get your number? you're really fun to talk to" he says. i nod.

"sure!" I grab a notepad and sharpie out of the desk drawers, writing my number on it and handing it to him.

"seeya hiccup. it was a nice chat"

"see you soon, south" i wave goodbye and walk out the room, smiling.
