Marinette finished the last cut into her pumpkin, creating a lopsided jack-o-lantern face. She frowned at the thing sitting on floor.
"That's not how I wanted it to turn out" Marinette commented, tilting her head to the side. She leaned back on one arm, using the floor as support. "Well, if you look at it from this way it kinda looks normal?"
"Sorry girl," Alya laughed. "I would give you lessons on how to carve a jack-o-lantern, but those would last until Christmas."
"This is why I prefer baking and sewing," Marinette threw her knife down on the floor in defeat.
"It's okay, we just won't put a candle in yours" Alya chuckled, uncrossing her legs.
"Hey!" Marinette slapped her friends arm playfully and they both broke out into a chorus of laughter. Marinette had to admit, her pumpkin was the spookiest looking thing thus far.
Once the girls' laughter died out, Marinette peeked over at Alya's pumpkin and, of course, it was etched with the Ladybug symbol; a circle with 5 dots carved out inside, all spaced correctly according to her yoyo. It wasn't a hard design to carve out, but Marinette must say, the circles all looked to be the same size and were smoothly carved. No ridged edges, and they were spaced perfectly apart.
"Okay, no fair!" Marinette laughed in protest.
"What can I say? I am the pumpkin carving queen."
Marinette stood up, bending down to pick up her pumpkin. "Well don't feel so sure of yourself once we make those Halloween cookies. Then, you're going down," she challenged in a playful tone.
"I don't doubt that one second," Alya replied, picking her pumpkin up as well.
They carefully walked downstairs, making sure to watch their step. Though Marinette wasn't too proud of her pumpkin, she didn't want it to explode on the floor.
Sabine was brewing some delicious pumpkin spice coffee in the kitchen and Tom was watching the news on TV.
"Mom, we're gonna put our pumpkins outside!" Marinette announced as they walked out the door.
"Okay honey!"
The girls carefully made their way down even more stairs. Marinette nearly tripped, but she regained her balance before chaos ensued.
They exited through the bakery door and proceeded to set up their pumpkins outside. Alya pulled an electric candle out of her pocket and placed it into her pumpkin, switching on the light.
"There, perfect," she smiled. "Now, time to dominate in making those cookies."
"You're on," Marinette grinned.
"You are so going down, girl!" Alya laughed as they raced back into the bakery.
*
Marinette lounged on her couch in front of the TV, feeling full after all of the cookies she had just devoured. Alya lay opposite to her, their legs sprawled out on each other.
She was happy to admit that she had won at baking the cookies; Alya had burnt her batch twice, so Marinette stepped in to help her.
"Tonight was so fun," Alya admitted. "We haven't had a night like this in so long, where it's just the two of us hanging out."
"I know, I had a great time," Marinette smiled.
"Where did you parents go for their anniversary again?" Alya asked.
"A fancy restaurant down the street. I'm so happy for them."
"Me too," Alya yawned. "I'm also very... sleepy..." Her eyes slowly fluttered close.
