Parang panandalian akong nabingi dahil sa sinabing iyon ng doctor. Pneumothorax? What's that?

“A-ano po y-yun?” — tanong ko na bakas sa boses ang pagka-utal. Masyado ata akong mangmang para maintindihan agad ang diagnosis sa akin. “It's not serious naman po diba? M-medyo sosyal lang yung pangalan pero di naman siya serious?” — dugtong ko habang naka-ngiti.

“Uh, well.. Pneumothorax is the medical term for a collapsed lung. Pneumothorax occurs when air enters the spaces around your lungs, which is the pleural space. Air can find its way into the pleural space when there’s an open injury in your chest wall or a tear or rupture in your lung tissue, disrupting the pressure that keeps your lungs inflated.” — paliwanag ng doctor na animo'y gumuguhit pa ng kung ano sa hangin.

Kumunot ang noo ko dahil sa sinabi niya. Parang bigla akong na-bobo. Tumingin ako kay Jao na kasalukuyan ay naka-kunot rin ang noo. Sa aming dalawa ay alam kong mas malawak ang pag intindi niya sa mga bagay na to. I know he'll understand more than my brain can do.

“S-so you mean she has a disease in her lungs?” — tanong ni Jao na bakas sa mukha ang pagka-gulat.

Nanatiling tikom ang mga bibig ng iba pa naming kasama na animo'y iniintindi rin ang sinabi ng doktor.

“Absolutely.” — baton ni doc na nagpa-pikit kay Jao ng mariin.

“But how is it even possible? She don't smoke. She don't drink. Wala ring nangyari sa kanyang injury that can cause her lungs to collapse.” — pagdadahilan ni Jao na animo'y hindi maunawaan kung saan ko nakuha ang sakit na to.

“Well, pneumothorax has two types; the traumatic and nontraumatic pneumothorax.” — usal ng doctor atsaka huminga ng malalim bago mag patuloy sa pagsasalita. “Traumatic pneumothorax occurs after some type of trauma or injury happened to the chest or lung wall. This happened usually when there is something that triggers your lungs to collapse; like vehicle accident, broken ribs, a hard hit to the chest, etc..” — paliwanag ng doctor. “While on the other hand, nontraumatic pneumothorax is a type of pneumothorax that doesn’t occur after injury. Instead, it happens spontaneously, which is why it’s also referred to as spontaneous pneumothorax.” — dugtong pa ng doctor.

Napa-yuko ako dahil wala ako halos maintindihan. Parang sumisikip ang dibdib ko dahil sa usaping ito.

“So in Ms. Valleña's case, she has this spontaneous pneumothorax... So that explains why she's having steady ache in the chest, shortness of breathing, tightness in the chest, cyanosis, and fast heart rate.” — muling usal ng doctor ng mapansing walang nagsasalita sa amin kahit isa.

“Is this something serious? Is this curable? A-ano yung pwede naming gawin para agaran siyang gumaling?” — sunod-sunod na tanong ni Jao na mababakas sa boses ang pagka-despara.

“This disease can be usually cured without any serious treatment, but in her estate, dahil tumagal at napabayaan, her case became fatal.” — baton ng doctor.
