Colt sat rigidly in the backseat of the luxurious car, whose brand or name he didn't know. He was extremely nervous. He kept stealing glances at Mean, who was sitting next to him and was busy reading some documents.
He chewed on his inner lip. He was nervous. It had been so long since he experienced any emotions. Maybe being able to walk out of the four walls of the prison did give him a piece of mind. He had finally escaped hell.
As the date of his release came closer, he started realising that he had nowhere and no one to go to after getting out. He did consider taking his life and going to where his parents and grandmother were but decided against it because if he were to give up on his life, that would be the biggest disrespect to his dead family.
In the end, he figured that taking Mean's offer and starting a new life was a better option. Maybe that would help him out of the shadows of the past.
When he contacted Mean, telling the latter that he was taking up the offer, the older man had immediately made the arrangements. All Colt had to do was follow him.
In normal circumstances, one would find it dangerous to completely believe in a stranger whom you had only met once and follow him. But for Colt, there was nothing left for him to lose. So he took on the risk.
Colt didn't know if he should be happy and excited. That feeling never gave him good memories. The first time he felt extremely happy and grateful was when his grandmother showed up at the orphanage to pick him up after his parents had passed away. He had thought that he could live with his grandmother and had gotten excited by the idea that he wasn't actually an orphan.
But that happiness didn't last long as cancer and old age snatched his grandmother from him, leaving him alone in the huge world. After his grandmother's death, people around him labelled him as a jinx and avoided him like a plague. He had to work hard day and night to continue his education.
Everything seemed to be falling into place when he finally received the acceptance letter to one of the best private schools in the province where couldn't even dream of going to, with a full scholarship.
He had thought that his bad days were over and that as long as he worked hard, he could graduate from high school with flying colours and secure admission to a university like his grandmother wanted him to.
That was when he met Boun, the only person who didn't treat him as a jinx. His greed made him get closer to Boun for the little bit of care and warmth the latter gave him. Boun had never looked down on him and always treated him well making him long for more.
He never cared about Boun's background or needed any kind of treats like the rest of Boun's friends needed, all he wanted was Boun's care. That was also why he left Boun hanging even after realising that the latter's feelings for him weren't actually the ones towards a friend.
He was too afraid to tell Boun that he couldn't see him as anything more than a friend but was hesitant because he was worried that Boun too would walk out of his life, leaving him as lonely as before.
Colt was delighted to find that Boun had actually chosen to take his side when the rest of the world humiliated him. He was dreaming of living a peaceful life alongside Boun until he got to know that both of them had been kicked out of the school.
The news was devastating to Colt. Being kicked out meant that he was blacklisted by schools in the province. His dream of completing his education went down the drain. The same applied to the part-time jobs as well. He couldn't find any jobs that could pay for both his and Boun's expenses.
Still, he was relieved that he had Boun was by his side. Yet, all of that came to an end when Alan had heroically saved him from the bunch of smelly gangsters, winning his trust. When Alan acted like a loving big brother who was distressed by a bratty younger brother, he chose to believe in him.
Colt blindly trusted Alan's words when he said that Boun was actually the reason he was kicked out of the school and was unable to find jobs. He was also told that if he hadn't taken Boun in and had the latter go back home, then he wouldn't have had to suffer so much.
Under the manipulation of Alan, his feelings for Boun started turning into hatred. When Alan offered him that he could have his old life back as long as he obeyed the older, Colt took the offer without a second thought. He became one of Alan's men.
His growing negative feelings towards Boun made him betray him at Alan's command. All he could think of was to get his life back on track. He didn't care what price he had to pay for it.
Even when Boun found out everything and confronted him, he didn't have a slight bit of remorse. He firmly believed in Alan.
It would be a lie if one were to say that he wasn't relieved when Ohm managed to save Boun on time. But the feeling of hopelessness if things didn't go the way Alan planned, made him think otherwise.
When the cat was out of the bag and Alan's deeds were found out by Ohm and his men, Colt felt anguished and worried about his own future. That was when Saen came to him with an offer.
The middle-aged man told him that as long as he would take on the blame for Alan, he would help him get back to a normal life. He might have to go to jail for a while but he would be released once the dust was settled.
As the man was the father of both the assailant and the victim, Colt chose to take on the offer. He took the blame for everything and went to jail.
Little did he know that he was being played. He got no help from Saen after he got sentenced. He was a teenager who had no power, money or relatives to get help from someone else. He could only wait. Wait for the day Saen would help him out of the prison as promised.
With years passing by, he realised that no one was going to help him and he was stuck in the rotten prison among the predators that made his life a nightmare.
When Mean told him the details of what Boun had to go through because of him all through the years, he felt ashamed and guilty. If only he had been a little bit more clear-headed, he might have been able to save his only friend from his miserable family.
Colt wanted to apologize to Boun for everything, even though he knew that a mere apology wasn't going to change the damage caused. He was too mortified even to show up in front of Boun. He just hoped that Boun could overcome everything and live a good life.
