Viren's POV:This book was different. This one I recognised. It was the exact same book Renalda held or looked through every time Jeff and I paid her a visit. It was her lifeline.
I stepped toward the hovering magical spell book and was surprised when it jumped up and down excitedly, as if it recognised me. It's hard leather cover opened followed by its weathered pages until it landed on one page in particular.
My hand reached out on instinct as something inside me compelled me to caress it's enchanted pages. The book slammed shut angrily almost taking my fingers with it.
"It doesn't want you to touch it, it just knows you can help it." Alexa's words echo in the hospital room. I cock an eyebrow having figured that much out for myself.
"Your not the only one wanting to touch it, I can feel its importance too." Alessia stepped up towards the book giving it a nod. "Please show us how to help my niece."As the book approached and flicked to the same page as before, I took in the title reading it out loud.
"Eternal rest."
Alessia picked up where I left off, clearly not happy with my slow pace.
"Everyone knows that balance is needed to safely use magic. In the cases where the demand is high, so too is the cost. For example, a life for a life can sound simple enough, however if the life-force offered, is fragile or not at the same level of certainty as the one someone is trying to bring back, the trade can have unexpected complications. If the trade is done while one life force is already sick or dying, it occasionally weakens the effectiveness and could possibly put the person who has come back to the world of the living, into a permanent sleep state, or simply give them borrowed time. A temporary solution.
The same can occur when using a fetus for example. Many have tried to conceive for this purpose, only to realise they were using a fragile life force. Taking into consideration the issue of them being unable to provide their own concent, the outcome can be unpredictable and cause various complications."
Alexa's sob was quiet, however we all heard it. "I took my babies choice away from her." As Alessia's attention moved to her cousin, I continued reading, only for the book to flick to another page.
"When a witch or wizard dies, on very rare occasion, magic can be gifted. Particularly magic that wasn't theirs to begin with. when gifted, the type of magic can clash with that of the new owners. For example, a fire witch now possessing water magic may experience times when the owner is calm and accepting, which enables the magic to coexist withing them, however if triggered, heightened or lacking control, it may separate and appear similar to an aura. If this is the case it can act on it's own accord making it dangerous and unpredictable to both the magic wielder as well as those around them. If the magic perceives a friend as an enemy it may attack them."My eyes move to Alessia who seemed frozen in time. "Is she-"
"She's having a vision, they don't normally last this long." Alexa says watching her closely,
Alessia blinks a few times trying to regain herself, before looking toward Alexa. "Your baby girl knew she was leaving us. She somehow knew it, and was accepting of it. It is why she was constantly draining you of magic, she thought it would help Jaycee if she gifted it to her, but it doesn't seem to have worked."
"Or we are yet to understand its full purpose." Coal says beside me looking thoughtful.
"Either way I'm more confused than before." Arial says approaching Jaycee's side."Don't!" As Alexa's warning sounded, Arial makes contact with Jaycee only to be thrown backwards into the wall.
