Laylas POV:
Heartbrake. It's not often a conversation wolves talk about. Most of us are taught from a young age that our mates are everything. It is a blessing from the moon goddess herself, one that should not be refused or taken for granted, and rejection happens so rarely it's almost unheard of.
They say wolves share a soul. One half resides in us, the other in our mates, only coming together to make us whole once the bond is complete. It is why most are mated so effortlessly and waste no time completing the mating process.
Majority of wolves are however, mated to another of the same species. It has only been the last eighteen years or so that wolves have begun accepting and adapting to the idea of being mated to another species.I shake my head in an attempt to clear my thoughts of him, my mate. He is all I see and think about when I see couples holding hands, or when my parents smile lovingly at one another when they think no one's is looking.
I can't even escape him when I close my eyes. I see his long silver hair and the way tiny braids weave in and out of the thick strands, just enough to keep his hair out of his face when he walks. His unique yellow green eyes glimmer brighter than any star I've ever seen, but the one memory that always gets me, is the way he ran from me as if I was the most hideous creature he had ever seen. He looked mortified at the idea of becoming my mate.
The familiar sharp stabbing pain in my heart, is a constant reminder of the rejection I am yet to face. A stray tear escapes my right eye, but I am quick to wipe it away.
All I've been doing for the past two days is avoiding everyone and sitting here feeling sorry for myself, while my best friend the future Alpha of this pack, is laying unconscious in a hospital bed. Jaycee is the one person I want to speak to and the only one who understands the pain I am in, yet she is unable to listen. I know my parents have been worried about me, especially when they see the plates of food they leave me is untouched, but I haven't an appetite. Any time I come close to taking a bite, I remember my mate and the look on his face, and it's enough to make my stomach swirl.
"Layla darling, can I come in?" My attention is drawn to my bedroom door, at the sound of my mothers voice. I haven't even got the energy to get up and open it."Sure mum." I reply watching as she comes inside. Her eyes settle on my crumpled form and the scrunched up tissues on my pillow. I try my best to give her a reassuring smile, but fail miserably judging by the worry lines that appear on her face.
Her eyes briefly flicker to the plate of food on my bedside table before she sighs.
"I thought you might like to know that Jaycee may wake up soon. Apparently Luna Alexa believes Salvator will somehow be able to wake her up, says she has one of those feelings again and you know how accurate they are.""Salvator." I taste his name on my tongue and am reminded of how he used to connect with Jaycee through her dreams. My eyes light up with an idea and I wonder how it's taken me this long to think of it. I need to tell the Luna.
I jump out of bed before my knees give way. Lucky for me mum caught me letting out a startle gasp. "As happy as I am to see you up and about, you have to eat something so you don't faint. You're too weak right now."
I quickly dress and force myself to eat the apple mum hands me. A few bites was all I could manage before making my way to Aunt Alexa's room. To my surprise it was Alessia who opens the door and hands me a small black vial.
"Dream weaver." I read out loud before looking back up at her. "Thanks aunt Alessia." I say about to rush off, but her hand stops me.Tell Alexa that Zander sent you to get her, she has her walls up." I nod once and make my way to Jaycees room.
Once my aunt Alexa leaves, I take her seat. Glancing over at Salvator I wonder why he never wears a shirt under his leather jacket, and why he is always trying to save hybrids. What's his deal anyway? She already has a mate, and his acting like a love sick puppy. For someone who spends so much of his time saving people, how has he not thought of a way to help her yet?
