Jaycees POV:

Cassy grins excitedly realising who we had been spying on. "So, who has a crush on Salvatore and who's going for his speedy sidekick? Only asking so I know who my competition is." She says winking at Sadie who had a grin on her face.

"Oh no Cassy, you've got this all wrong! We are not hot for either of them, just watching what we're up against, you know with the competition and all." Layla replies smoothly making Cassy frown.

"What competition?"

"The one Alpha Zander announced to the pack this morning. Even non pack members were present and word has spread like wildfire. Where have you been living? under a rock?" Layla replies.

Cassy grins bitting her bottom lip. Her fangs peeking out from beneath her them. "You could say that. Turns out I have a wolf but it.. had to be restrained for a few days after my first shift."

"Cool congratulations! Ah.. about the wolf thing, not having to be restrained." Layla says cringing. "Why, what happened?" She asks keeping the conversation off the boys, and attention off us.

"Turns out my vampire side is still much stronger than my wolf side, so she went on a rampage unable to resist our thirst. She hasn't dealt with the cravings as long as I have so attacked a guard. The Luna had to restrain us until she shifted back, allowing me control again."

"Okay, remind me to not get on your wolf's bad side." Layla says laughing.

"Now tell me why you still haven't answered my question." Cassy says brining our attention back to the guys, only to see River dragging Coal our way.

My eyes widened as Layla's eyes flashed green. I quickly put up and illusion, focussing my energy onto also blocking out all sounds. It's something my mother could do and she taught me about the feelings and steps to take in case I too was able to. I however hadn't had a chance to practice it before. A shimmering dome went up around us, just as Layla's possessive growl echoed in our space.

Layla panics pressing herself against the large rock, trying to become one with it as Coal approaches.

"So that's Layla's mate I take it?" Cassy says with a knowing look.

"He.. he will be able to smell me.." Layla whispers making my eyes widen. I only focused on light and sound. My magic still too new to me, to change it now.

"I got this." Cassy says biting her hand. Her fangs slice a cut deeply, the crimson liquid pooling in her hand. I watch as she smears it all over Layla's face and hair, drenching her scent in Cassy's. A look of horror and disgust equally displayed on her face, but it's overpowered by fear as Coal takes his last step, standing before us. I try not to cringe as Cassy continues wiping Sadie and I also in her scent as to throw Coal off.

Our hearts race but no one moves a muscle as Coal sniffs the air only to frown. "That's strange no one is here." He says to himself as River continues to drag him away.

Layla's claws pierce her palms as she fights her wolf's desire to shift and tear River off her mate.

"River I am happily mated you know. I can walk myself." Coal grumbles pulling his arm out of her hold.

Layla releases a breath at his words, her wolf calming at her mates loyalty, even while thinking we were not here.

Ember lets out a hearty laugh drawing my attention back to her fiery eyes and flaming hair. I watch as she loops her arm through Viren's.
