Jaycee's POV:
I woke up groaning to the sound Layla's alarm clock. "Like mother like daughter." I mumble forcing my eyes open.
"Who's idea was it to have a sleep over in Layla's room again?" Sadie asked throwing a pillow in Layla's direction only for it to miss, nocking her alarm off her bedside table."Five more minutes." She groaned lifting the covers over her head as if that would block out the sound.
"Layla's, if I recall correctly she demanded we stay." I say getting off my makeshift bed and turning the alarm off. "Why is your alarm set ten minutes before mine? You don't need to train until seven." I ask placing it back into the bedside table.Layla shot out of bed as if remembering something, and pushed me into her ensuite. "Because I take an extra ten minutes to wake than you and we all need to win against our opponents today, so practising with your father will give us an edge. No offence to Ed, Alpha Zander is Alpha for a reason."
I hear Sadie hum in agreement through the door, before she shrieks. "Wait.. by we, you mean you and Jaycee right?"
"Nope I mean you, Jaycee and I. I may have told uncle Ash you were staying here to train for a few days, since your training did nothing to help you when you got captured."
Sadie groaned. "But I wanted to get captured to find Jaycee and you, after you went missing. No doubt Ash told Jet-"
Layla interrupted Sadie. "Who will come here to prove how good of a trainer he is, not wanting to be blamed for your failure to evade capture." Layla said laughing. I could hear the amusement in her voice. "And they don't know you went out looking for trouble since you made it a last minute decision playing around with the blind spots in your mothers visions. It's why Ash and Jet were guarding you in the first place, and why your mother had no idea you were captured for a week. There is no way you will admit to that, so therefore you won't rat me out and will go along with my message as planed."
I laugh impressed with Layla's plan as I turn on the water and get in. I had a quick rinse before stepping out and wrapping a towel around me. Sinse Layla pushed me into her bathroom in a hurry, I hadn't brought my change of clothes. The jeans I wore yesterday would be too restricting for training, however luckily I had an outfit on the bed in my room.
"Hey Sadie, mind grabbing my clothes from my room?"The girls giggled on the other side of the door before opening it and shoving something into my hands. They weren't my clothes. Looking down at the shorts and crop top I sighed not having energy to fight them on this right now.
The crop top was a great fit as Layla always had a slimmer body to mine with less curves. Now that I looked more stick like, they fit well.
"This is actually okay, I expected something looking like lingerie from you Layla."
"That's because Sadie replaced the ones I picked out with something of hers knowing you will outright refuse." Layla sighed in defeat.
"Smart girl." I compliment before heading out of the bathroom. Their eyes widened and I felt their heartbreak and pity before they could look away.
"See this is why I plan on going back to my room to cover myself. You guys have grown used to the scars on my arms and legs, yet you can't take your eyes away from the ones I hid from you. Imagine what the rest of the pack will do when I make an appearance. I look hideous. They will stare and I can't bare the thought of being subjected to all the pity, or worse the mocking comments."
"I thought you came out of there too quickly." Sadie stated already knowing there would be no changing my mind.
"The pack has grown a lot in the past two years Jaycee, and even -"
"Don't say his name. I don't believe they have changed that much, after all the only reason for the change is because I was no longer here for them to bully." I say taking a seat in the bed.
No one spoke after that as the two girls got ready. Sadie shadow transported me to my room watching as I threw on my leggings and hoody.
"No.. it's going to be hot today, I've seen you pass out from the heat wearing that. Pick something lighter." Sadie says walking into my closet. "Here this will cover you and is thin enough to keep you from passing out."
I nod accepting the maroon long sleeve top. I shake my head. "It's almost red and will stand out too much. I like to blend in remeber?"
"Oh I remember, but you're wearing this today." Sadie replied not leaving room for argument. Sighing we meet up with Layla before making our way to the outdoor training area. Tables were full of folded clothes for the wolves that would be shifting during training, as well as self filling glasses of water and platters of fresh fruit from mums garden.
I let a small smile grace my face at the familiarity of it. This place is my home."I still can't believe I'm back. With everything I went through as a kid I wasn't sure I'd miss this place but I was wrong." I whispered realising I had spoken the words outloud. Layla and Sadie gave me a sad smile, understanding and pain shone brightly in their eyes as my words sunk in.
"So nice of you girls to finally make it." My dad says walking over to us.
I roll my eyes. "We're five minutes early." I say lightly, giving my dad a hug.
"I missed you my little butterfly." He whispers in my ear holding on a few seconds longer than usual."Missed you too dad. Does this mean you'll be going easy on me?" I ask hopeful yet knowing the answer.
"Not a chance. Stretch then run ten laps to warm up."
I hear Sadie groan but do as she's told. After ten minutes of stretching and ten laps we were already out of breath.
"I'm definitly out of practice, I can't understand how you kept up with us after being gone for much longer." Layla huffed trying to catch her breath.
"I was everyone's main go to for duties so I was stronger than the other slaves, and I have Alpha blood running through my veins." I replied freezing as I noticed my father off to the side. His hands were balled into fists as he stepped up to the dueling field."I'd hate to be you right now." Layla whispers patting me on the back as I step inside the dueling circle.
"I'm going to make sure that never happens again." My father croaked out. His appearance showed no emotion but his voice and eyes conveyed it all. Greif, pain, loss, guilt, frustration, anger, love. "To do that I need to push you harder than you've ever been pushed, trainer you longer and teach you-"
"Dad." I stopped him mid sentence. "It isn't your fault, if it wasn't for you and mum I probably wouldn't have survived." I admitted.
When I felt his confusion and doubt I continued. "You taught me to endure not just my pain but others, push myself more than I thought I could, and taught me to be strong. I'm not talking about physical strength but emotional strength. The kind that kept me stubborn and remembering my worth on my darkest of days. Even when they erased my memories, beat me, isolated me and starved me, I never forgot who I was or my worth. I never gave in or gave up. You and mum raised me into the stubborn, head strong person I am today and I know now that no matter what people say or do to me, I know who I am and who I want to be."
I saw the internal battle as my father attempted to hide his emotions by closing his eyes. A disobedient tear betrayed him as it fell from his dark lashes sliding down his cheek. Dad quickly wiped it away allowing his determination to train us take over.
"Jaycee I love you, and it is because I love you that I need to push you harder than ever. Begin."
