Soda Water

--- Chase's Point of View ---

I was in the mess hall when it happened.

I had slept most of the past two hours but my daughter was making me crave, cereal of all things, so I was eating some when the table shook, I at first thought that it was an earthquake, but a boom came.

"What was that?" One guy muttered worried. The other airmen in the room got up and walked to the window looking out.

After a moment when there was no more shaking and I realized it was an earthquake I got up and walked to the window - I saw that there was a large smoke plume in the distance near the mountains, my eyes narrowed, they were running drills, did one of them crash?

I knew that Rooster and Hangman were flying, and I wasn't in the mood to wait, I wanted to find out what was going on right away without any delay.

I walked out of the room and outside the building, walking right to the control tower that was on the edge of the base, using my universal badge to scan into the room I opened the door and walked up there.

"Woah... Shannara." One of the controllers exclaimed when I opened the second door, it was so odd to hear my last name like that, but I didn't hold a rank technically so he could get away with that.

They were shocked to see me, but I really didn't care, I wanted answers.

"What happened?"

There was a silence, I knew something was off, I just knew it, because they were acting strange."

"I'm sure it's fine."

I narrowed my eyes at them.

"I swear to god if you don't come out with it I'm going to use whatever power and influence I have and make your life very difficult. I'm not some simple little girl."

"Lieutenant Seresin has crashed into the side of a mountain."

My heart stopped, and I felt my stomach clench as if our daughter understood.

"Did he parachute out?"

"They...they didn't see him eject."

The room suddenly did a tilt a whirl and it felt as if soda water started bubbling in my brain and soon I felt myself fall forward, and someone grabbing me.

{5 Hours Later}

I woke up with a start as if I was pulled out of a dark room, I looked around the room shivering – recognizing that I was in the infirmary.

"Woah, easy, fuck easy babe...you had me so scared, they had to sedate you for a moment." I looked over to see Rooster sitting beside me, he looked awful, he had clearly been crying and he looked tired.

I swallowed my mouth was dry, clearly understanding what was going on he handed me a small cup, I gulped the water down, holding my stomach, worry overcoming me.

"Easy, try not to move to much...she fine, they checked her." Rooster soothed he put his hand on my lower stomach and the other held my hand.

"What happened?"

"What do you remember?"

"They, they said he didn't eject."

Tears started to fall down his face as he looked down, I felt tears start to come to my own eyes, he looked up at me.

"I'm so sorry baby...I'm sorry."
