The garden on the other side of the Garrison grounds was pretty quiet. No people were there when you arrived, which you didn't mind at all. You liked spending your walk alone with Keith.
"So, you want to tell me about what happened?" Keith asked, holding out his hand for you to take. You put your hand into his, casually walking around the place full of beautiful flowers and trees. In contrast to the deserted place the garrison was in, this garden was really flourishing and full of greenery. It almost felt like you were on another planet.
"I went to see my mother, to say hello and whatever- you know, I just wanted to see how she was doing. I wanted to be a good daughter or something." You sighed, combing a hand through your hair in frustration.
"What a mistake. She clearly moved on from everything without me. I'm still somehow to blame for what happened and- uh, that sucks. I'm not sure what I expected, really, but it wasn't this."
You halted in your step, taking a deep breath. "I don't know. It made me question some things. I don't believe I'm to blame anymore, but why does she still insist? It made me so angry that I stormed out."
Keith squeezed your hand lightly as he stopped beside you. He looked at the flowers in the distance with a thoughtful expression. "I'm sorry she made you feel that way," he said softly, his voice quiet and steady. "She is probably still struggling with it, even if she says otherwise. Doesn't make it right, but...," he paused, thinking of what to say. "Don't ever believe her and think it's your fault, okay?"
You nodded, swallowing down the knot in your throat. "I don't think I'll talk to her again. At least for a while. I don't need that in my life."
"Good." He pulled you into an embrace, and you let yourself lean into it, savoring the warmth it gave you. What would you ever do without him?
"Let's sit down for a minute, okay?"
Keith agreed, leading you to a beautiful dark oak park bench. "Why is this place so well decorated?" you mumbled under your breath. It really didn't suit the Garrison, but you weren't complaining.
You sat in silence for a while, the both of you watching the soft wind move the flowers back and forth. The leaves of the tree rustled in a familiar way that brought back memories of back then. It felt like spring, on a sunny day. Back then, when you visited the park with your dad. People would fill this whole place, taking a walk or playing on the grass. Children would run around the playground, yelling and laughing with each other.
You wanted times like this to come back. You wanted for Sendak to finally be destroyed and for Earth to go back to how it was.
"This next mission is going to be dangerous," you mumbled to no one in particular. Your eyes were fixated on the ground in front of you while you leaned to your left and rested your head on his shoulder. You wrapped your hand around his arm, leaning on him. His arms had definitely gotten bigger, you now felt. Heat rushed to your cheeks- you couldn't help but think about weird things.
