"From all the things I pictured in my future life, nothing could have prepared me for this."

You eyed the map on top of the box carefully as you made your turns around the mall.
The money the man handed you made jangling sounds in your pockets, a reminder for you to keep your end of your promise as well. He stressed that this packet had to arrive at the destination after all.
It seemed like you were slowly reaching unfamiliar territory in this mall. You looked around the many stands selling food and trinkets. Each stand had a sign on it with a number as an address and by looking at them, you figured you were already close to where you had to deliver your packet.
A strange feeling of curiosity gnawed at your consciousness that you couldn't quite shake off. Your eyes wandered around the box in front of you again. It was probably nothing important- the man seemed trustworthy enough and what he asked of you wasn't something unusual either. You still felt the urge to open the package though; your hands almost did it on their own a few times before you stopped yourself.
You really weirded yourself out with this behaviour. Since when had you gotten so eager to involve yourself in other people's business? The contents of this package were none of your business.
The signs on the street told you that you only had to make a few last turns now. There were a few broad roads leading to where you were headed, but the shortcut leading through an alley on your right was probably faster. You tightened your grip as you turned to it.
This was probably still safe, right? That path looked empty and abandoned, so the chances of you losing your delivery in there were slim.
Against any better judgement, you decided to take the shortcut. You had your bayard with you, of course, so in case anyone tried something you were still relatively safe.
The sunlight of the setting sun barely reached this part of the mall. The rays of light cut off a few meters above your head but the ground was barely lit up by it. The buildings you walked between were still from before the war. They had been stabilized with pillars and other reinforcements, but a few holes in the walls still let air and light pass in the intersection in front of you.
You hummed a tune as you kept walking on the sandy path. On your way to this place, you already saw many shops selling the most beautiful and fitting jewelry for Allura and Romelle. You just hoped Romelle would accept your gift.
It wouldn't be too surprising if she didn't, although you noticed her warming up to you lately; and by that you meant she didn't glare at you anymore when you spoke. She stopped ignoring your presence long ago and replied to you from time to time.
Overall, it was really good progress. You didn't really deserve her forgiveness, and you didn't plan on demanding it. This gift was about to be something with no strings attached.
You heard muffled voices in the distance and slowly halted in your tracks. They probably belonged to two men, judging by the bass in their voice.
The closer they got, the more you could hear. You took a step back and turned around behind a few empty boxes.
