Tommy POV

Tommy tried his best to sit still through his classes, but even that was difficult. He just couldn't wait until after school. He couldn't wait to play alongside his brothers. It was a dream come true for him.

But going through the day, his excitement seemed to create nothing but annoyance.

Sitting in class, he couldn't help but talk about his excitement. "And then I might officially join the band! I mean... I hope that what that means... Or I could just-"

"Will you shut up?!" his friend snapped, sending him a cold glare.

Tommy immediately shrunk, regret filling him. "S-sorry." he quietly apologized, focusing back on the paper in front of him. Biting his lip, he tried to keep himself from crying. That would only make things worse.

Tommy kept to himself for the rest of the class period, working on his homework silently. His friends laughed around him, making him feel more alone than ever. Building his confidence up again, he tried to join the conversation. But then he saw his friend's glare and suddenly his story didn't matter.

When the bell rung Tommy rushed to put all his things away so he could join his friends. But when he was finally ready, they were already gone. Sighing to himself, he tried to put on a fake smile. Maybe they were just in a hurry. Leaving the classroom alone, he headed towards his locker.

Quickly opening it, he grabbed his music and his lunch. Looking down the hallway, his heart stopped. His friends were already in the doorway to the cafeteria, not even looking back once. He didn't even have time to invite them to listen. Not that they would have cared apparently.

Blinking the coming tears away, he shut his locker. Walking down the hallway, he was silent. He kept his eyes on his feet. He had always hated being alone. When he was alone he was vulnerable. There was nothing to stop the voices. There were only more reasons for him to believe those thoughts.

He was staring at his feet so much, that he wasn't even looking where he was going. Stepping into the band room, he nearly collided with someone.

"Woah!" his band teacher exclaimed, his hand resting on his heart in the hopes of calming it down. "Sorry Tommy, I didn't see you there."

"Sorry Mr. Walburg. I should have been watching where I was going." he tried to laugh, but it sounded so fake.

The man raised an eyebrow, studying the boy with a frown. "Are you feeling alright Tommy?"

Tommy nodded, looking everywhere else except his teacher.

Mr. Walburg sighed, knowing he wasn't going to get something out of the blonde. But he wasn't going to push. Instead, he invited the boy in. "The piano is all set for you. So feel free to play as much as you want." He smiled as he watched Tommy's eyes light up.

"Thank you." Tommy grinned. "I have to practice for tonight!"

"Tonight?" the man questioned, unsure of what he meant.

"My brothers are letting me play a gig with them!" the blonde exclaimed, excited that someone had asked. "They're going to let me play piano with them! And I've been practicing none stop! And they might even-" Suddenly he stopped, remembering what his friend had said. Quickly he apologized, knowing he was probably annoying his teacher. "Sorry I get a little carried away..."

"Don't apologize." Tommy looked at him in surprise. "You have nothing to be sorry for. I'm glad you're so excited, that makes me happy."

"It does?"

"Of course! Seeing my students finding something they love makes my job all worth it." he explained proudly. Looking down, he sighed, "I'm afraid students are scared to get excited about things. Which is very unfortunate. I think life should be enjoyed. So don't ever apologize for being excited about something you're looking forward to."

Tommy smiled widely, his sadness finally getting let go. "Do you... do you want to listen to the music?" He was hesitant, but a part of him already knew the man's answer.

"Of course I do!" his teacher exclaimed, almost as excited as him. The man set down his lunch, abandoning his mission of heading to the teacher's lounge.

Tommy wasted no time in sitting down at the piano. With a bright smile he began to play, the music taking control of his fingers. He played his heart out, not needed the music nearly as much as he thought he would.

His teacher stood there through his entire performance, the proud smile never leaving. He offered a few pointers of how to elevate the music, as well as encouraging Tommy.

Suddenly it didn't matter what his friends thought.

All that mattered was it was something he loved.
