Tommy POV
But the peace he felt didn't stop the townspeople from talking. Tommy spent a few nights with Wilbur's pack, never really wanting to leave. But with each passing moment, he couldn't help but feel guilty. He was leaving his own pack behind. Or worse... replacing them.
Tommy knew he needed to go back. The question was, how was he going to tell them? The trio had grown so accustom to having him around. But his stay had never been permanant.
Walking through the town, he attempted to find the courage. And in doing so, he couldn't help but eavesdrop on conversation. Passing by, he couldn't help it.
"Did you hear that wolf boy is living with Phil?"
"I wonder where his pack lives..."
"Can you imagine the money you could get for all those furs? It would feed us for winters to come!"
"We start hunting tonight!"
"Do you think he would tell us their location?"
"Shhhh! There he is!"
Tommy picked up his pace, his heart following. How could people think about doing such a thing? This was his family... the creatures that had raised them. Entering through the house he had grown to love, he knew in that moment that his pack needed him.
As soon as the door opened, Phil called out to him. "Hey Toms!"
The blonde hated how warm those words made him felt. So simple, yet so impactful. Taking off Wilbur's jacket, he moved further into the house. They had to understand his reasonings. They just had to.
Stepping into the kitchen, he gulped. All three of them sat around the table, the dishes already set. One placed especially for him. How could he be so unlucky? Telling all of them at the same time was going to be three times as hard as he had imagined.
The first one to sense his distress was Techno, who watched him with a careful eye. "Everying okay?" he questioned.
Tommy took a deep breath. He shifted from foot to foot, trying to find the words. "I-I have to leave."
He regretted the words as soon as they left his mouth. The look of shock and sadness on their faces was enough for him to want to stay. But he couldn't. Abandoning his family wasn't an option.
"L-leave?" Wilbur stuttered, his eyes already glazing over. "What do you mean? Did we do something wrong?"
Tommy carefully processed his words, struggling for a moment because of how fast they were said. "No." he replied, biting his lip. What was the right word? What could make him understand?
"It's not safe out there." Phil added, standing up from the table. "You shouldn't be out there all alone... You have a place here, haven't we shown you that?"
Tommy resorted to staring at his shoes. Looking them in the eye was too daunting of a task. The heartbreak was too much for him to bear. "I-" But he cut himself off. Nothing he said could ever make them understand. He was sure of that.
But he was wrong.
Techno gave him one look, finally speaking up. "We'll give you supplies- food and water." he corrected himself. He pushed his chair out, set on following his own instructions.
Wilbur grabbed his arm, "We can't just let him leave!"
The pinkette glanced back at the blonde he had come to love as his own brother. Shaking his head, he met Wilbur's eyes. "We can't make him stay. If he wants to go... We need to love him enough to allow it."
"But he's just a kid!"
"He seemed to managing alright on his own before you met him." Techno shrugged. Pulling out of Wilbur's grip, he headed towards the storage room. His brother followed after him, desperate to get him back on his side.
Tommy watched after them, hating that he caused so much pain and sadness. Maybe he should have just left in the middle of the night. All of this could have been avoided. But he knew that it would have postponed the ineviable pain.
Phil approached him, struggling to keep it all together. He swallowed, locking eyes with Tommy. "Is this truly what you want?"
Tommy slowly nodded.
The man took a deep breath. He took a step back, running a hand through his hair. "Okay... But you know you're always welcome here, right?"
"Like a... a promise?" Tommy questioned, thinking back to when Wilbur had first brought him back.
Phil smiled sadly. "Yes... like a promise."
Tommy opened his mouth to say something else, only to be cut off Techno's entrance. Wilbur shadowed after him, looking down at his hands. The pinkette walked up to Tommy, offering a small bag. "You shouldn't have to worry about food for a few weeks." he explained.
Tommy accepted the gift, searching through it. It was filled with all kinds of fruits and bread, along with a few blankets. It was a wonder as to how Techno had even managed to fit everything in such a small bag. Biting his lip, his panic spiked a bit. "How will I give it back?" he questioned.
Techno froze at his words. "You... you're not coming back?"
The blonde shook his head, again regretting the action at Techno's eyes. The truth was, he couldn't be sure he would ever be able to return. It would be hard enough to get the alpha to trust him again to rejoin the pack. And he intented to guide his family further away from the town, not wanting to risk any villagers coming after them.
"But-" Wilbur began, stopping at Techno's glance. He shrunk down, turning away from the blonde.
"You can keep the bag as a token from us." Phil gulped, holding back what seemed to be a tsumani.
"T-token?" Tommy asked, confused as to the new word. He looked towards Wilbur for help, like he usually did.
The brunette shook his head, forcing himself to walk away in a rush of emotions. Letting the blonde go was not in his capablities. But he had to. And the only way to do that was to walk away.
"A gift." Phil restated. He followed after Wilbur, succumbing to his emotions.
Tommy was only left with Techno. The blonde looked at him, surprised to find Techno avoiding eye contact. Usually the older was always holding a glance, studying his every movement. But now he struggled to even spare a glance his direction.
The pinkette took a deep breath, managing to speak words for all of them. "Keep yourself safe out there, alright?" And then he turned on his heel, disappearing out of sight.
Tommy watched after him. Reaching up to his own face, he was astonished to find tears. It had been so long since he had cried. The last time he could recall was when thinking about his parents... his family.
Shaking his head, he knew this was all for the best. His pack needed him more. Throwing his bag over his shoulder, he turned over his shoulder and headed out the door.
He left the world he had come to love so much.
