Phil POV

Phil bundled the baby up in his cloak before loosely following the others. He stepped carefully, trying resist the temptation of looking down at those big blue eyes. Act natural, he reminded himself. He doubted he would be able to make it all the way home without his secret being revealed. But he hoped that when they discovered the baby the distance between the ruins of the village and them would be much greater than the distance home.

Tommy didn't seem to mind his new friend. Within only a few steps, he had discovered his new favorite thing. Phil's emerald necklace. It was a gift from his wife, matching the other emeralds she had given to Wilbur and Techno once they were old enough. Each of them had requested different ways of wearing it. Techno wore the gem as an earring in his left ear, that way it was easy to keep track of, while also being out of his way during fights. Wilbur was more sentimental, coiling a chain around his wrist, that way he could always see the emerald. A simple reminder of his home when he missed them. Being the first, Kristin had made hers into a ring, resembling the bound she had with her husband. At first, Phil had wanted to do the same. But upon further thought, he had decided to make it into a necklace, wanting the emerald to remain close to his heart.

Sparing a glance down at the baby, Phil smiled. Tommy had the emerald in his hands, staring at it with so much curiosity. The blonde knew it was only a matter of time before it became a chew toy, but at least it kept him quiet.

Phil kept walking, his mind still falling back to the emeralds. When Kristin had traded for them, the villager had actually given her five emerald shards. She had politely given one back, but he had refused. He was adamant about the pieces being together. "You'll need five," he had said, much to her annoyance.

Maybe he had been right.

They continued through the ruins with Techno and Wilbur doing most of the talking. Phil kept out of it, afraid his great secret would be revealed.

"I don't understand what these people could have done to deserve this," Wilbur murmured, stepping over a fallen pillar. He couldn't stop himself from looking towards the center of the village, where he was sure festivals had taken place. If he stood still for a moment, he could almost see it. People dancing to the sound of music under strings of lights and stars.

Techno scoffed, not even sparing a glance. "Sometimes bad things just happen, Wilbur."

"That doesn't make it right," he sighed. The horses came into view, making Techno pick up the pace. Wilbur didn't match his pace. "Maybe we could have helped them."

Phil said nothing, still distracted by the bundle in his arms.

"We're scavengers," Techno blinked.

"But we're still good people, right?" Wilbur's question was softer.

"The same good people who left a defenseless baby."

Wilbur grew silent at that.

Phil again kept to himself, lost in his own thoughts. He was doing pretty well, he thought. They weren't suspicious yet and once they were on their horses, he could stay to the back, pretending to still be upset. It was the perfect plan. But there was one thing he hadn't considered. Babies weren't silent. And Tommy was no different.

"You alive back there, Phil?" Techno's sudden voice made him jump. "I expected you to have some spur of wisdom during our conversation." Phil turned his head, ignoring the beads of sweat dripping down his neck.

"We can't help everyone, just like you said." It was too quick. Phil knew that the moment the words left his mouth.

Techno's eyes fell down to the unnatural bundle of cloaks in his hand. "Don't tell me-"

And that's when Tommy giggled, too loudly for Phil to even attempt to cover for.

"Was that a baby's laugh I heard?" Wilbur came up behind Techno.

"Um... No."

Tommy laughed again to confirm.

"Phil."

"We need to get home, Kristin will be waiting for us! Come on! Let's-"

"Phil."

"I'm sure she already has dinner on the stove! I bet she's making baked potatoes, you're favorite!"

"Phil!"

The blonde swallowed. He saw no escape. All he could be was honest. "We're too far to leave him," he pointed out. Techno continued to glare. "We might as well just get going." Phil stood tall, taking on his dad-like stance. There was nothing they could say that would change his mind. Besides, he was the oldest here.

Instead of waiting for another scowl, he climbed on his horse, making sure Tommy was comfortable before turning to the others.

"Well? Are you coming or not?"
