Phil POV

Everything had been going so perfectly. The town had been abandoned, burnt to a crisp by thieves. Of course, that meant that they didn't get first pickings. No chests filled with emeralds or bails of dried hay. But that didn't mean Phil didn't believe in luck. Every once in a while something would be forgotten. Scrabs of iron slabs, a stash of baked potatoes, sometimes even old tools with barely a scratch on them.

This town was like every other. Everywhere he looked houses were crumbling to the ground, each roof falling in. Windows were broken in, shattered glass scattering the ground. Doors had been taken off their hinges. Hoofprints scattered the mud, confirming Phil's assumptions. This raid had been brutal.

Phil jumped down from his horse. Techno and Wilbur followed, already dividing into separate areas of the town. Phil made his way towards the nearest house, dunking in through the doorway. They searched silently, their swords always at their side. It was hard to know what they would find. And not everything was always pleasant.

The floorboards creaked beneath his feet, shifting with his weight. Tables had been shoved to the side, the shattered remains of dishes littered the floor. Beds had been overturned, the sheets and blankets ripped. Phil couldn't stop himself from counting the chairs. A family of five, maybe six. He paused, where were they now? Part of him prayed they were safe, perhaps taking to the safety of the woods. But he knew the more realistic outcome.

There was a reason this place was so destroyed.

Phil was quick to wipe his tears away, before turning back towards the chest overturned in the back of the room. He barely heard Techno's shout.

"Phil!" the man turned towards him, frowning. What didn't he understand about working silently? "Phil! Come quickly!" The urgency in his voice made Phil rush out of the house.

He rushed down the cobblestone path, nearly colliding into Wilbur. He was about to scold the boy for stopping in the middle of the path when he was interrupted by a cry. Looking around in confusion, he heard it again. "Wha-"

Techno backed out of the way, revealing a crying baby tucked beneath fallen debris. Phil's eyes grew to twice their usual size. The baby was small, likely less than a year old. Who would leave a child out here like this? Phil thought before thinking back to the ruin of the town. Maybe they didn't have a choice...

"I can't believe its even alive," Wilbur murmured behind him, glaring down at the tiny baby.

Without a second thought Phil reached down to cradle the child, taking it in his arms and hushing gently. Two blue orbs looked up at him in silently, studying him. The baby could have been judging him for all he knew. Another minute went by before the baby started grabbing at his blonde hair, tugging it just a bit too hard. "Ouch!"

Techno smirked, "I think he likes you."

"I- Ouch!" he cried again, finally pulling the baby's hands away from his hair. The baby giggled, looking up at him with nothing but innocence. Phil couldn't help but smile down at the child. He was cute, far cuter than he had any right to be. "Poor kid. Who's knows how long he's been out here."

"Judging by the ruins of this place, I'd guess that no one is planning to return any time soon." Techno commented, watching the baby carefully. "So, what are we planning on doing with him?"

Phil was silent.

"No, no! Whatever you're thinking, stop thinking it!" Wilbur exclaimed. "We can barely feed ourselves let alone take care of a baby."

"For once, I agree with Wil on this." Techno commented.

Phil thought for a moment, looking around at the ruined town before glancing down at where they found the baby. They couldn't just leave him here, could they? With no one to protect or look after the child, it would surely die. And living with that knowledge... Phil wasn't sure he could stand it.

"Let's just leave it here and head home, pretend like nothing even happened." Wilbur was already reaching for the child.

But he was quick to pull away, making the baby laugh. "But we could look after him... Give him back the home he lost." He paused, "Doesn't he deserve to live as much as the rest of us?"

Wilbur and Techno grew quiet at that.

"Besides, how hard can be?"

Techno rolled his eyes, "May I remind you, we have no experience looking after a baby? And how are we going to scavenge? We can't just leave him all by himself."

"We can bring him with us!" Phil offered.

"Absolutely not!" Wilbur shouted. "Do you know how many close calls we have? Scavenging is no place for a child." Throwing his bag back over his shoulder, he traced back towards the way they had come. "Just leave him."

Techno followed behind him, giving Phil a stern look. "I bet you'll forget about him in a week."

Phil looked back at the child, a name already coming into his head. "I highly doubt that," he whispered to the baby. Those bright blue eyes were impossible to forget. The baby smiled up at him with so much innocence. Innocence that he wanted to protect.

No matter what.

He made up his mind. Wrapping the baby in his old cloak, he headed after the others. By the time they realized their fourth member, they would be too far to return him. Pleased with his plan, he put his finger to his lips. "Now, you have to be silent... Tommy," he gently hushed. Tommy began sucking on his knuckle without a care in the world. Phil laughed, holding him tightly against his chest.

Already he knew there was nothing he wouldn't do for him.
