Tommy POV

Every inch of Tommy ached. The hard days in exile had chipped away at any kind of energy he had left. It was nearly impossible to force himself to get up. The internal battle was sometimes too much for him to bear. And he was afraid that his breaking point was on the horizon.

But despite that fear, he continued to fight. He got up everyday even though he knew the outcome. He knew that anything he got would be destroyed within the final hours of the day. He gathered the materials, allowing the last remains of his hope to grow. Maybe today Dream would let him keep his hard earned tools and materials. But deep down he knew it was a lost cause. For Dream to do that, he would have to admit that Tommy wasn't a threat.

Sometimes he wondered why he did it. Why he still tried. The answer was simple. His family. He wanted to see them again. To feel their warm embrace, to hear their joyful laughs. It was enough to keep him going. Without that hope he was nothing. And he knew that.

But even holding onto that spark of hope didn't prevent it from going out. The day came when Tommy finally snapped.

Just a normal day turned into a nightmare.

Tommy had collected everything he could manage before the sun went down. Bits of iron, a stone pickaxe, a stone sword, along with as many scraps of meat he could find. Living in exile for so long had depleted his supply of meat. Animals had become rarer and rarer, forcing him to grow skinnier and skinner. Not that he really noticed, the hunger had simply become a part of life.

Turning towards the beach, he watched as the sun began to sink lower into the water below. Sighing, he sat beside his tent, awaiting Dream's arrival. He always came at the same time, just a few minutes after sunset. He tried to enjoy his last few minutes of triumph, when he still had everything he had fought for. But he couldn't ignore the shakiness of his hands at the thought of Dream, or the weight of his eyelids.

Closing his eyes, he tried to relax. But it was an impossible task. One that he had tried too many times before to no avail. He barely had time to think about it before he heard approaching footsteps. A part of him hoped it was Techno, come to save him from this Hell. But he knew better. His brother was never coming to save him.

"Tommy! My friend!" a bright voice exclaimed. Tommy always found trouble trying to decipher if the emotions was real. At this point, he was too tired to even attempt. "How are you doing today?"

"Great!" Tommy tried to sound excited, but his voice failed him. The shakiness he had felt before would not leave, despite every fiber in his body trying to force it out. He was supposed to be confident, the boldest person on the server. But that wasn't even true anymore. He was a shell of what he once was.

Dream tilted his head, his expression unreadable through his mask. "Is something wrong Tommy? You seem off today." he commented, a small hint of pride lacing his voice.

Every part of Tommy wanted to scream. Scream about all the pain he had been through. Scream about how much he wanted it all to end. Scream about how he deserved better. But he couldn't. Because Dream was his only friend. And to lose him meant he would lose everything. "I... it's nothing Dream."

"You worry me Toms." Tommy felt his anger boil at the nickname. Only his family called him that. The people who loved him. The people who would never treat him like this. "You know you can tell me anything. I'm here for you Toms."

A new anger erupted in Tommy, one that he hadn't seen in a long time. "Don't call me that." he growled, glaring at the blonde in front of him.

Dream seemed to stiffen in surprise, quickly recovering from his shock. Clearly he didn't think Tommy had any fight left in him. But this was Tommy. Interestingly enough, the spark was nearly impossible to put out. But Dream had an idea, one that might just solve all his problems. "What did you say Tommy?" he said sternly, like an older brother scowling the younger.

"I said don't call me that!" Tommy snapped, not caring about the punishment this time. There were very few things that mattered to Tommy anymore. But that nickname... that was special. It was the bond he had formed with Wilbur... with Techno... even with Phil. For Dream to use it was like poison.

Dream stood up straighter, "I think you forget who's in charge Tommy. I can call you whatever I want." His words sent chills down Tommy's spine. Because what he said was true. Tommy had no power over Dream, no matter how much he pretended he did.

But Tommy didn't care. "You don't call me that."

Dream paused, a smile passing behind his mask as he put his plan into play. "You must miss them a lot. Phil... Techno..." he stared directly at Tommy. "Wilbur." The blonde looked away, the hurt shining in his dull eyes. "You're a fool if you think they care about you."

Tommy shook his head, not allowing himself to believe him for a second. "They do. I'm their family... their blood." he whispered to himself. But that small voice tugged at his mind, exposing his doubts. What if they don't? What if they're glad I'm gone?

"If you ask me, I would say they're relieved. With you stuck in exile they don't have to worry about you messing everything up." Dream continued, watching the younger carefully. He watched with great interest as the words seemed to dawn on Tommy.

"Messed up?" he repeated, searching his memory for what he meant. But spending so long in exile made it cloudy and easy to influence.

"Don't you remember how Wilbur died? How you lost the election?" Dream questioned. He kneeled down to Tommy's level, playing the role of the friend. "Oh Tommy, that was all you. That's why you're here after all. To keep you away from everyone. To keep them safe."

"But-" Tommy couldn't find the words. Was he right? Did he have a reason to lie? "They don't care about me?" his voice broke, his heart cracking at the mere thought. His last hopes... were pointless?

"They never did. They fear you Tommy."

Tommy broke at his words, the tears running down his face before he could even comprehend what was happening. His own family was afraid of him? Did they hate him too?

"But I don't fear you Tommy. I'm still here." Dream reminded him gently, running a hand through the blonde's hair. But it wasn't comforting, it forceful. He tugged on his dirty hair ever so slightly, not that Tommy noticed. He was just desperate for the touch. He leaned into it, not caring how much it hurt or how quiet his voice had gotten.

"You don't hate me?" his voice was small, smaller than Dream had ever heard before.

He smiled, "Of course not." He held his arms out, allowing the blonde to crawl into them. "I'm the only family you've got left, alright? And together, we'll teach them all a lesson."

"What lesson?" Tommy mumbled.

"They were right to fear you."
