Tommy POV
Tommy hated being a burden worse than anything. Asking for help was the last thing on his mind. It wasn't that bad, he told himself. He could deal with it. The bruises weren't worse than the ones he received at the orphanage, and for that he was grateful.
It was a Friday, Tommy's favorite day of the week. The final day of misery for a few days. Dragging himself out of bed, he quickly pulled on his usual outfit. He used to wear a white t-shirt outlined in crimson every day. It was his favorite, mostly for the color. Problem was, it couldn't cover the bruises. He reached for his new "favorite" sweatshirt, a jet black hoodie that he had stolen from Techno years ago. Combing a hand through his messy golden hair, he grabbed his backpack before heading to the living room.
Their living room was a sky blue, his mother's favorite color. Paintings lined the sides of the walls in between the two bookshelves. There were two oak colored couches alongside an emerald green couch in front of a large TV. It was the perfect place for movie nights, just big enough for their entire family.
That was another reason Tommy loved Fridays, particularly the nights. Sitting on that couch between his big brothers, laughing so hard his lungs hurt. Phil was always yelling at them to be quiet, complaining that he couldn't hear the movie. Kristin would hush him, telling him to just enjoy the movie. Tommy loved every second of it more than the last. Somehow, it made all the bruises worth it.
"Earth to Toms?" a hand ruffled his hair, pulling him out of his dwelling thoughts. Tommy didn't attempt to push the hand away, allowing the hand to tangle his hair even more. Wilbur chuckled, wrapping an arm around the boy. "You ready for that big test today?"
"I studied for a few hours, hopefully that will be enough," he shrugged, knowing that was the least of his worries. But Wilbur couldn't know that.
"At least you studied. That's more than Wilbur would ever do," a raspy voice mocked behind him. Tommy chuckled, watching as Wilbur's eyes changed to daggers.
"I do study, thank you very much!" he exclaimed.
"Tell that to your C in chemistry."
"Hey, a C is still passing!"
"Barely! If you can even call that passing."
"Not everyone can be as smart as you-"
"Boys! Can you please give me and your father a break? I can't deal with all your bickering," Kristin stepped into the kitchen, a gentle smile on her face.
"Sorry, Mom," Wilbur and Techno mumbled, still glaring at each other. While they were known to fight about the little things, as brothers do, they were also as loyal as can be with each other. Being twins made them two sides of the same coin. Though, they were always arguing which side was the brighter one.
Kristin turned to Tommy, pressing a gentle kiss to the boy's forehead. "How did you sleep, Toms? I hope you didn't stay up too late."
The blonde shook his head, lying through his teeth. "I actually went to bed early last night."
"I'll believe it when I see it," Techno rolled his eyes.
Tommy glared at him, "I have a big test today, Tech. And sleep is important."
The pinkette shrugged, "Sleep is for the weak."
"Techno, don't teach your brother bad habits," Kristin ordered. Not that it actually prevented anything. All three of the brothers had terrible sleep schedules. But it wasn't Tommy's own doing. Kristin began placing bowls on the table, "Come eat before you have to leave."
The three of them immediately sat at the table with Techno and Wilbur already fighting over their favorite cereal. Tommy tuned them out, grabbing the closest box. He couldn't stop himself from thinking about the upcoming school day. Just the thought of the coming hours made his bruises sting.
Before he knew it, he was staring off into space again.
"Come on Tommy! Hurry up!"
"We're going to be late!" Shouts came from every direction, dragging him back into the real world. Jumping to his feet, he quickly threw his dish into the dish washer before throwing his backpack over his shoulder. With a quick hug from Kristin, he was out the door with his brothers.
Kristin watched after him, concern edged into her chestnut eyes. Something was off about Tommy, though she wasn't quite sure what. Watching the car disappear past the driveway, she shrugged the feeling off. Perhaps he was just tired from the long week.
In any case, she was sure a movie night would fix the boy right up.
